They’re not all created equal and if you don’t have a clear idea of what you’re going for your movie ends up formless, directionless and dull. The set up had me intrigued and I was keen to see where it was going to go. Turns out, it wasn’t really going anywhere, and it did so very slowly. There are solid minutes of characters walking slowly along corridors lit by, but the looks of it, Dario Argento. I was pretty much checked out. The story is paper thin, so its obvious the director’s mind was more focused on imagery than narrative. Credit to him, the imagery is incredible, but not enough reason is given for us to put up with it. I’m glad the director would go on to make Mandy, a vast improvement on his directorial debut, which seems more concerned with attracting arthouse praise than being an entertaining film.
