In the wake of their father's mysterious disappearance, two estranged brothers -- responsible Gordon and reckless John -- reunite to sift through the contents of his stubbornly anachronistic VHS rental store. Among the inventory, they discover an interactive VCR board game, which their father viewed just before he vanished. Intrigued, the boys pop in the tape, press play, and soon discover that, far from an ordinary game, the video is a portal to a nightmarish alternate reality.

Scott Marks San Diego Reader The fresh-faced cast and first-time director Jackson Stewart give it their best, but once the tape enters the machine, all bets are off. Rated: 1/5 Dec 15, 2016 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com Beyond the Gates, while far from a masterpiece, is hugely entertaining if one is in the right frame of mind when watching it. Rated: 2.5/4 Dec 14, 2016 Full Review Neil Genzlinger New York Times Shows early promise but eventually ends up in the bin of ordinariness. Dec 8, 2016 Full Review Emilie Black Cinema Crazed ... a fun horror-adventure film that is both modern and a nice throwback to the 80s and 90s. Rated: 4.5/5 Apr 19, 2020 Full Review Patrick Bromley F This Movie! A movie exploding with affection for the kinds of movies that inspired it. Oct 31, 2019 Full Review Joey Keogh Wicked Horror Beyond The Gates is colourful and lively but it's packed with great spooks, especially when the very literal gates appear down in the basement. Diana S This is as B-movie as they come but entertaining enough if you're in the mood for some mild gore and a modular storyline. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/16/24 Full Review Thom G Beyond the Gates has its charms in terms of atmosphere and inspirations. However, its slowness, flaws and regular inconsistencies could have been overlooked and less frustrating if the development of the story had offered real and more refined challenges (or at least if the film had shown more struggle on the part of the protagonists to overcome these challenges). Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Entertaining retro horror set all around two brothers and their family owned video store about to close. Worth the watch! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Liam D Probably the best horror movie centred around a board game by a 80s nostalgia fest Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/04/22 Full Review F T Although entertaining, this film neither succeeds at being scary nor at being funny (assuming the latter was an intended purpose - unless the script was just written like that). I wouldn't recommend it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/06/21 Full Review tim s "Beyond The Gates" is a low budget horror based on the premise set by the 1995 film "Jumanji". Start a game you have to finish it...or else. It is a good idea that plays on nostalgia value. A family clearing their fathers belongings after his death find a VHS interactive game in his office . The Tape is still in the VHS player so interested to see what their father last watched they play the tape. Intrigued by the game they take it to their fathers home where the family are currently staying and start the game.  Using an interactive game premise similar to "Atmosphere", which was a popular VHS and board game of the early 1990's, the host of the game delivers instructions to the players from the T.V. However in true horror style the players have to finish the game or face consequences of visitations from demons and even threat of death.  The main problem with this film is the budget, the idea is good and it has some real interesting moments. "Beyond the Gates" suffers from poor effects and lack of a good set for the gates scenes. Having played similar VHS games in the past I enjoyed the stroll down memory Lane. However a younger generation who have no idea what these games are will have no nostalgic value for the film. They are left with nothing but a low budget bunch of jump scares, bad effects and lacklustre story. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
