Big Gold Brick recounts the story of fledgling writer Samuel Liston and his experiences with Floyd Deveraux, the enigmatic middle-aged father of two who enlists Samuel to write his biography. But the circumstances that lead up to this arrangement in the first place are quite astonishing--and efforts to write the biography are quickly stymied by ensuing chaos in this darkly comedic, genre-bending film.

Critics Consensus

Quirky to a fault, Big Gold Brick tries and fails to use visual tricks and a crowded narrative to hide its fundamental lack of purpose.

David Ehrlich IndieWire Big Gold Brick”may be a film absent even the faintest trace of purpose or momentum -- its endless parade of energy-less moments connected only by the lack of life shared between them. Rated: D Feb 28, 2022 Full Review Stephanie Zacharek TIME Magazine Big Gold Brick may be a bit too enamored with its own quirkiness, but everything Garcia does, no matter how outlandish, feels perfectly natural. Feb 28, 2022 Full Review Glenn Kenny RogerEbert.com Unlike many other film enthusiasts turned filmmakers, Petsos hasnt figured out anything useful to do with his influences. Rated: 1/4 Feb 25, 2022 Full Review Jason Delgado Film Threat Big Gold Brick could’ve been trimmed down a bit with a runtime of two hours and twelve minutes, and some of the characters, like Lucy, are not fully fleshed out. But overall, I enjoyed Petsos’ strange vision. Rated: 7.5/10 Apr 7, 2022 Full Review Scott Campbell We Got This Covered If you can get on the exact same wavelength as 'Big Gold Brick', then there's plenty to enjoy about writer and director Brian Petsos' distinctly unique and wholly original debut feature. Francesco A It looked like a book, mixed with a touch of theater acting, all squeezed in a movie. It was nice. Unexpected. And self-conclusive. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/10/22 Full Review Audience Member An utter waste of talent and worse, a waste of your time. From the overly-long static shots to the plot that goes nowhere to characters you simply don't empathize with or even hate, why this movie exists is beyond me. Emory Coehn does a job of portraying a pathetic loser, but there's nothing about the character that creates any real reaction. The movie is trying too hard to be bizarre and kooky with no pay off at all. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member This had all the components to be good it just never caught its stride 2.8 . I also did not like the lead biographer Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/25/22 Full Review Audience Member Best movie I've ever seen. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Thought-provoking. Emotional. Petsos lets us into a carefully constructed world of beauty and absurdity full of peculiar circumstances and dazzling characters; highlighted with brilliant visuals, well-timed humor, and a polished soundtrack. Big Gold Brick is a work that invites repeat viewing. It will make you ponder the world at large and leave you with a long-lasting sense of wonder and awe. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member A poetic vision wrapped in a dark absurdist comedy, "Big Gold Brick" isn't a film for those who refuse to—or simply don't know how to—contemplate life beyond the surface. This is the type of film that will move you to both feel and think. Then cause you to ponder your role in the absurdity of life, all while taking you on an entertaining ride that causes you to laugh in the most unexpected moments—like the comedic timing of a cotton swab jar emptied or a full-on mental war waged with a Santa doll. The writing is brilliant and multi-layered, making it a film you can watch five times and still find something new you hadn't considered before. There's satire on fate with the two main characters embodying a juxtaposition of near apathy and "everything has a purpose." This is the kind of film you watch and know the writer/director thought deeply about every single detail with profound intention. Every color of every set, every ebb and flow of the soundtrack, every detail of a simple frozen yogurt logo. This isn't pure entertainment. "Big Gold Brick" is the perfect combination of art and entertainment, not taking itself too seriously while also maintaining elusivity only detectable to those who like their films to feel more like art. In other reviews he's often compared to veteran directors, but he's not a conglomerate of writers and directors piled into a film. He's Petsos. And someday that name will be used as a comparison when rookie filmmakers enter the scene. He's just original. The film is original. And like it or love it … there's not one person who can deny that it's incomparable to anything they've ever seen before. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Read all reviews
