It never builds tension but never gets convuluted. It's focused but has no pint and meanders at the same time. Everything is pretty unremarkable about it. It covers PTSD, family issues, commitment to your country, being a hero vs being a solder, the love amongst your brothers in arms, but what it never does is make it all work together into something. It just feels like all the stuff like the movie deal, his Sgt that was killed, his sister, cheerleader relationship which wsa probably the best thing, and the rest of the stuff just happens and doesn't really have a point to anything. I can think of lots of other war movies from American Sniper to The Best Years of Our Lives that cover these same subjects in a cohesive manner with engaging fully developed characters aong the way. This really doesn't do either of those ever. Billy is your typical soldier dealing with typical things vets deal with. Everyone else is so forgettable save for Tucker and Martin who were good. (Maybe the cheerleader to) The flashbacks to Iraq felt like a seperate film also. I don't know nothing is broken but everything is so middle of the road the entire time with some nice shots here and there. Nothing terrible but I just don't get what the point of this was. Skip It. Just....It's there and something that exists. Wish it was more. See more Tom F Jun 6 I enjoyed the book, a smart funny look at a complex story that hates glorifying war but loves soldiers. The trailer for this film makes it look like exactly the kind of mindless patriotic military-worship the book openly mocks. Worse yet, the film is about nothing at all, sure to disappoint everybody. After watching this I listened to the audio book (free on the Libby app with my library card) and I recommend doing that very much. I can only recommend the movie to those building a case against Ang Lee as a good director. Joe Alwyn does a good enough job with the lead. Steve Martin delivers none of the malice his character shows in the book, but I blame the toothless script. Kristen Stewart could have done a great job with her role as described in the book, but the movie doesn’t give her much to work with. They shouldn’t have shown the battle scenes or the Shroom character at all, and having Vin Diesel phone it in just undercuts his role in the story.
