Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times We don't believe the characters, and so the elaborate chases and escapes and stunts and special effects are all affectations. Matthew D Goldie Hawn and Mel Gibson play well together. Director John Badham’s romantic action-comedy Bird on a Wire (1990) is pretty entertaining with a beautiful and hilarious Goldie Hawn. Mel Gibson is super goofy as this silly guy relocated by the FBI, who runs into his ex-wife Goldie Hawn. Badham’s direction features tons of shootouts and car stunts. Writers David Seltzer, Louis Venosta, and Eric Lerner came up with a cute romance, wild drug story, and plenty of action set pieces to impress. There’s some great lines warning against greed, to be careful of the government, and being sincere in a relationship. Their jokes for Goldie to say are a blast. Goldie Hawn is stunning as the heroine Marianne Graves in her purple dress. I was shocked to see that she was 45 filming Bird on a Wire because she still looks 20 here. She’s so playful and sexy with her signature cute whimsy. She effortlessly nails the suggestive jokes as this clever lawyer on the run. Mel Gibson is just going insane this whole movie as Rick Jarmin. He’s quite fun as this oddball during this Lethal Weapon era of Gibson’s career. He acts well opposite Hawn for a decently likable guy role. David Carradine is good as the drug dealing villain Eugene Sorenson. Bill Duke is fantastic as the other villain Diggs with a commanding screen presence. Stephen Tobolowsky is funny as the corrupt FBI agent Joe Weyburn. Joan Severance is so pretty and playful as the animal Dr. Rachel Varney. Editors Frank Morriss and Dallas Puett’s quick cutting keeps the couple on the run moving for a fast paced 110 minutes. Cinematographer Robert Primes shoots some creative action sequences that are so exciting. I love all the close-up and medium shots of Goldie to really see her perspective more as we’re watching her heroine fall back in love with Mel. Stephen Jackson’s bright lighting looks great and vivid. Composer Hans Zimmer’s film score is very cool, atmospheric, exciting, and romantic. His hazy 80’s synths fit this 1990 actioner quite nicely. Crazy he never got to release it because it was too expensive to record with an American orchestra at the time. Costume designers Eduardo Castro, Monique Prudhomme, and Wayne A. Finkelman gives Goldie Hawn a sultry purple dress and cool purple leather jacket for the duration of Bird on a Wire that flatters Goldie beautifully. Makeup artists E. Thomas Case and Sandy Cooper really bring out her eyes. Hairstylists Sherry Linder-Gygli and Lyndell Quiyou style Hawn with her iconic blonde bangs and flowing long blonde hair. Overall, Bird on a Wire is a very simple road trip style couple on the run, but the lively performance from Mel Gibson and delightfully bubbly Goldie Hawn make it movie magic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/15/25 Full Review thiago s Filme fraco, o roteiro é fraco, as cenas são fracas, a história é fraca, o elenco é fraco, e ninguém ajuda a melhorar o filme, os personagens são fracos, e o filme deveria ter cenas bem melhores e relevantes, para fazer o filme ser bom Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/30/25 Full Review Melissa B I must have watched this film a thousand times. I love the chemistry between Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn. I much prefer her to Kate Hudson, even though at times she can be over-the-top. This is one of those films you love that you can watch again and again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/04/25 Full Review Darren P Good film liked the Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn connection.
