It may not be particularly scary, but Black as Night has just enough bite to satisfy audiences in the mood for dark, teen-focused supernatural drama.

Marshall M Really enjoyed this one! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/10/24 Full Review Bad Movies R To be a comedy is not funny. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 12/25/22 Full Review jp r This movie would have been a lot better if they had 1) not used some standard vampire movie tropes (including the very last part of the last scene), and 2) left out the liberal dose of anti-white racism sprinkled throughout the movie. Once again, within the walls of the movie, They prove that They feel it's ok for a black person (or actor) to use The Dreaded N-Word. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Nothing too unique or special that stands out in this vampire flick, and overall an average watch in my opinion. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member 2 out of 5 stars. Poor script and direction. The plot is decent. The film does lack scares and thrills. The acting is horrible. Especially with the main characters best friend who is annoying and cheesy with dialogue. It is one film that is forgettable. Definitely a film worth skipping. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/16/22 Full Review Audience Member Everything about this was cheaply done. The acting, the writing, the quick story progression... it was all cheap. The story made such a big deal out the main character being a dark-skinned female. If this was going to be the subject matter, then it should have been the subject matter-- not a gratuitous side-theme to a movie about vampires. Then they gave her a drug addicted mother, oof! That is not the kind of representation that black women want. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Robert Levin Newsday The actors don't get the opportunity to really build out these characters or to explore the coming-of-age touches in Shawna's story. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 25, 2021 Full Review Katie Rife AV Club Black As Night is assembled in an uninspired YA style that only accentuates the weaknesses of its script, which is laden with stilted dialogue and cringeworthy voiceover. Rated: C- Oct 9, 2021 Full Review Catey Sullivan Chicago Reader The Blumhouse release examines power structures with lots of fun scares. Rated: 3.5/4 Oct 8, 2021 Full Review Jordy Sirkin Jordy Reviews It Black As Night delivers a solid vampire tale with a bit of an emotional story to add more heart. You’ll catch a few genre references to the vampire icons that have come before, but the film does a great job of carving its own spot. Feb 22, 2023 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix [It] uses racism and colorism as punchlines in ways that aren't very funny and end up being grating in how these jokes are repeated. It's an awful horror movie that thinks it's being clever, when it actually dumbs everything down for the audience. Dec 31, 2021 Full Review Steve Murray ArtsATL You can predict some of the beats that follow, but Night is fun enough, with good messaging about self-image. Nov 5, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews
