Clarisse Loughrey Independent (UK) To those whose bedroom walls were never adorned with photographs of wild, galloping herds, Black Beauty reads as pretty, but emotionally vacant. Rated: 2/5 Dec 5, 2020 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times If you can edge thoughts of sacrilege from your head, this Black Beauty works well enough as a bank holiday entertainment in the style of mid-20th century Disney television. Rated: 3/5 Dec 3, 2020 Full Review Brian Lowry CNN.com It's ultimately too inert, even with the changes, to make this familiar story leap off the page. Black Beauty isn't bad, exactly, but rather the kind of flavorless fare that underscores how hard really good family viewing is to corral. Nov 30, 2020 Full Review Rachel Wagner Rachel's Reviews (YouTube) It felt so derivative of so many better films Feb 12, 2021 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse Errs on the side of sentimentality, favouring uplift over real edge, but while the smoothed-down version has changed some of the details of Sewell's story but the underlying messages of loyalty and kindness to animals remain the same. Rated: 3/5 Jan 29, 2021 Full Review Sabina Dana Plasse Film Threat This updated version of Black Beauty is well-done and touches upon some important points about being connected to animals, nature, and learning to care for others. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/05/23 Full Review crom w Mackenzie Foy's performance was good, movie not. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member While the acting was good (W/ Mackenzie Foy, Iain Glen and Kate Winslet’s voice) and I enjoyed a few moments here and there. This version of the story doesn’t strike a chord with me like the 1994 version did the first time I saw it. It felt fairly rushed after Beauty had left Birtwick and I almost thought she was never gonna go through other owners. Overall it was ok but the pacing was odd and made the movie feel a bit disjointed. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/23/21 Full Review Audience Member I think its kinda dumb Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member What a kinda disappointing movie Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Revisiting "Black Beauty" realizes a perspective towards generational retellings/remakes based on interested attachment – while vaguely remembered watching parts of the 1994 iteration adapting a timeless tale addressing issues with a fresh, inner insight. Since that release, multiple horse loving narratives, on the gentle bond displaying loyal appeals with nondiegetic engagement of empathetic attachment to that very bond, have caught our attentions, and this film generically continues that while trying to be faithful over its own significance. Supposedly tamed but did made its main points, and Winslet's surprising titular vocal performance captures the heart with Foy nicely completing the sweetly blossomed bond.
