Clarisse Loughrey Independent (UK) To those whose bedroom walls were never adorned with photographs of wild, galloping herds, Black Beauty reads as pretty, but emotionally vacant. Rated: 2/5 Dec 5, 2020 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times If you can edge thoughts of sacrilege from your head, this Black Beauty works well enough as a bank holiday entertainment in the style of mid-20th century Disney television. Rated: 3/5 Dec 3, 2020 Full Review Brian Lowry CNN.com It's ultimately too inert, even with the changes, to make this familiar story leap off the page. Black Beauty isn't bad, exactly, but rather the kind of flavorless fare that underscores how hard really good family viewing is to corral. Rated: 3/5 Jan 29, 2021 Full Review Sabina Dana Plasse Film Threat This updated version of Black Beauty is well-done and touches upon some important points about being connected to animals, nature, and learning to care for others. brittany r The video quality is super great, the one actor is a good actor , and the off track thoroughbreds is awesome, they are beautiful. After that it’s terrible. I don’t know how anyone wrote or made this even thinking about the film or horse people at all. It’s just another cliche wild girl mustang story. It is very unrealistic, they say black beauty is supposed to be a stallion of the herd but is a mare. There is nothing realistic at all. Many mustangs get round up for slaughter , and make a cliche stereo typical character story plot. It makes no sense. My biggest issue with this is Black Beauty is supposed to be a Thoroughbred. Ginger and black beauty are both Thoroughbreds in the book as well as the original film. Why use off track thoroughbreds if you’re not even going to stay true and actually represent the Breed? I want to see a film about the Thoroughbreds in the story. I don’t want to watch another wild Mustang film that’s so fake and cheesy not even giving credit to the Off track Thoroughbreds being represented in the film. There’s a hundred horse disciplines to choose from. There is a hundred breeds of horses to choose from if your not going to have Thoroughrbeds represent a film about Thoroughbreds then why not pick a breed that best represents the stories, why not if your going to show mustangs have real mustangs for casts and actually show what really happens to mustangs. It’s not some bad guy trying to steal someone’s horse to go to the meat market that’s rarely how it works. Mustangs aren’t even that difficult of horses. Mustangs as a breed are very calm, gentle, and if trained well not plucked from the wild they are almost as reliable as a quarter horse. The most misunderstood breed is the Thoroughbred. There is even stigmas about using them on films, so why waste this opportunity of using off track thoroughbreds to represent how “great thoroughbreds can actually be”. I mean there’s so many horse issues and dynamics. There’s alot of struggles thoroughbreds face. Thoroughbreds go onto many different environments and disciplines. I feel like whoever decided to make this movie doesn’t know anything about horses. Thoroughbreds in various disciplines and struggles, Standardbreds, saddlebreds, the Nez Perce, tennesse walkers, Selle Francis, Dutch harness, hackneys, quarter horse disciplines, draft breeds, extinct breed, Akhal Tekes, Arabians, Marwaris, Paso finos, the wild nakotas, Sorrias, welsh ponies, haflingers, Icelandic pony, Morgan’s, the history of the Morgan horse, the start of the thoroughbred, extinct horses, such as the old English black, Cleveland baby , fella Bella, fjord, and the list never ends. Thoroughbreds find themselves in many situations. Breeding on luxury farms, brought into the sale, trained for track work, learning intense track training and people, stress, those who win, those who don’t, those who go onto breeding farms, those who get sold into auctions in the kill pens, those that are advertised on off track programs and briught into rehabs, many first time handlers, the good and bad homes they wind up in; the starving and abused ones, the student who went to college and sold her ottb into a sale that brought them into a kill buyer, rescued ottbs, dressage ottbs, eventing ottbs, show jumping ottbs. The story of the Gelderlander mare who became a successful dressage horse with her rider. Standardbreds who fill up hard Amish lives after the tracks or wind up in shipping loads to slaughter. How Standardbreds are passed up due to their gait and body type often missing up on how good they are. Yet they want to talk about another cliche fake mustang story. The old hackney horse they could have made black beauty. They could have made black beauty two tbs and marry legs a grey hackney pony or welsh pony. Making black beauty a mare would make ginger to be a gelding. They didn’t think much of these characters at all, especially Ginger’s tough life as a thoroughbred vs black beauty who was luxury to have a better life then many of the thoroughbreds around him . Horse filmers do better! There’s a lot of subjects to film about and make interesting, stop with the Mustang repeat of flicka a hundred times. All jokes aside this was terrible to watch, absolutely butchered the orginal story of black beauty. Feels more like they were trying to ride the success of Flicka but were a decade too late. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/05/23 Full Review crom w Mackenzie Foy's performance was good, movie not. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member While the acting was good (W/ Mackenzie Foy, Iain Glen and Kate Winslet’s voice) and I enjoyed a few moments here and there. This version of the story doesn’t strike a chord with me like the 1994 version did the first time I saw it. It felt fairly rushed after Beauty had left Birtwick and I almost thought she was never gonna go through other owners. Overall it was ok but the pacing was odd and made the movie feel a bit disjointed.
