B K @maxmad 4d Look, the movie covers an important societal issue. The moment I remember most (apart from the arrests) is the actual clip of Donald Trump's speech, which showed how bigotry and racism still lives at the top. We all know this, but to see a world leader articulate it is frightening, sobering and frustrating. But the movie itself has an easy going pace. There are some moments of heightened tension, but in the main, the threat level for the viewer is not high. Or maybe I'm wrong, and it is the message of the movie that is the most important factor. In which case, message received loud and clear. The 1960s look and style is great, and there are some lovely performances especially from the co-stars. Washington is a strong lead and the screenplay has a solid, if dated appeal. It felt to me as if the movie had been made in the 1970s. It is a good watch, if only to remind ourselves that there are still people who judge a human by their colour. The idea of Ron Stallworth, a Black detective, infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan over the phone while a white officer attends meetings in person creates a fascinating combination of crime thriller, absurd comedy, and historical drama. Spike Lee does an excellent job balancing wildly different tones. The film can be funny one moment and deeply uncomfortable the next, using the strange reality of the investigation to create both entertainment and tension. John David Washington delivers a confident and charismatic lead performance, while Adam Driver provides a more restrained emotional perspective as Flip Zimmerman. The movie works best when focused on the undercover operation itself. Some scenes shift more toward broader social commentary than character or plot development, which occasionally slows the momentum. Even so, the performances, direction, and incredible true story make BlacKkKlansman powerful.
