It's a comical, yet painfully parallel portrayal of history repeating itself. Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman possesses strong performances, dynamic storytelling and harsh social commentary that's the director's best in years. 4.1/5

Spike Lee has always been a very hit-or-miss director for me. Even in the movies he hits, he still has things that really missed though; and even in his movies that missed, he still has things that hit. BlacKkKlansman is his first movie that I can say is genuinely great, possibly perfect. Iâ(TM)d really be stretching to find a fault with this movie. I would say if anything, some of the political undertones (or near the end of the film, outright overtones) might date the film a bit after this year and are certainly going to divide people. However, thatâ(TM)s really stretching to find a fault. And Spikeâ(TM)s never been one for subtlety, so he wanted to send a message in these divided times, and hey, message received. The movie itself, the story itself, is just so damn good. Itâ(TM)s incredibly entertaining while never shying away from the more disturbing aspects. I love how itâ(TM)s able to make fun of the Klan by showing David Duke as the most wonder-bread-covered-in-mayonnaise-aw-shucks-dorky white guy but still making it clear that he is capable of despicable acts. There are sequences in this movie that are genuinely upsetting and difficult to watch. However, there are other scenes that are laugh-out-loud funny. Itâ(TM)s a great approach, saying yeah these guys are dangerous, but letâ(TM)s not forget theyâ(TM)re jackasses we should be laughing at. Itâ(TM)s an incredible story, and told with such flair and style that itâ(TM)s immensely watchable. One of the best films of the year.

This film couldn't have come out at a more fitting time. It doesn't even try to hide its commentary on the current state of the US administration and GOP. It is accordingly fitting and nevertheless devastating to see the film end with actual clips from the Jacksonville events of 2017 and the presidents' comments. As for the main film about the undercover work inside the KKK in the late 1970s, it's pretty great. While the advertising (and poster) suggested an even crazier premise, it's still pretty fascinating, well done and acted.

The way BlacKkKlansman ends, felt in terms of formula almost as if I was supposed to have just seen some unsubtle propaganda, which seemed a very unusual note to go out on. It did sort of make me step back a bit, but it absolutely did not temper my enjoyment of the movie. I was engaged from the word go, and everybody in it is so good.
