What to Know

Critics Consensus

BlacKkKlansman uses history to offer bitingly trenchant commentary on current events -- and brings out some of Spike Lee's hardest-hitting work in decades along the way.

It's just about perfect in balance of tone, and it's easily Spike Lee's best film in years. Go to Full Review

Spike Lee will remain a leader in cinematic cultural commentary but that very potency was less present in BlacKkKlansman. While the messaging is still assured and deliberate, perhaps this film is set to the temperature of those in need of it. Go to Full Review

No one does it like Spike. BlacKkKlansman is sharp, powerful, and unapologetic. The sudden kumbayah felt too neat, but John David Washington is flawless. The messaging is exactly what we’ve come to expect from Spike—Black is beautiful, Black is powerful. Go to Full Review

Spike Lee’s power is on full display in his film BlacKkKlansman, a gut-punch comedy drama that uses the past to critique the present (and possibly future). Go to Full Review

Michari N @Micharithemoviegoer2019 Sep 25 From amazing performances to a good music score, this joint is a return to form Lee. See more Robert J Aug 25 only found out after i watched it that its supposed to be comedy, I don't know about that because I didn't see one scene or line that meant to be funny. But focusing more on the drama side it was just okay, the true story behind it had potential but it was not done well with basically no character backstory or anything. It felt like it was trying to hard to try and follow the "true story" rather than make what happened feel like the natural progression See more Julian Rex M @Julian_M Aug 24 Brilliantly exploring fresh facets of an oft-adapted topic, BlacKkKlansman gleefully subverts and builds upon preexisting ideas of racial conflict, hierarchy, structure, and that unnamable thing that makes people tick to present a wholly fulfilling, surprisingly fun, and deeply human based-on-a-true-story adaptation. See more Mate P @matepolcz Jul 4 ***SPOILERS*** BlacKkKlansman is a great film about the extremes. The plot is intriguing and the fact that it's based on truth, is devastating. The characters are also interesting and complex enough. The protagonists are really awesome characters. I feel like there was a lack of normality, and by that I mean there were very few sane people in that neighbourhood. The dialogues are amazingly-written and surprisingly funny sometimes. The ending montage has some powerful imagery, but I'm not the biggest fan of connecting movies directly to modern politics. I like it more when they leave it for the audience to make the connections. I loved the direction's style and the cinematography. The lighting is gorgeous and there are some tense scenes where the Dutch angle is the cherry on top. The cast is good and the acting is wonderul. I loved both John David Washington and Adam Driver as the leads. I also loved the production design, the sets felt perfectly natural for the 70s. BlacKkKlansman has heavy themes, but it's light-hearted dialogues make it an absolutely great watch. See more Ronald R @RonaldMiamiMovieCritic Jun 23 Great Movie!!! Based on a True Story!!!
