Critics Consensus

BlacKkKlansman uses history to offer bitingly trenchant commentary on current events -- and brings out some of Spike Lee's hardest-hitting work in decades along the way.

Jan 9, 2019 Full Review Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) There's nobody left in Hollywood making broad, sweeping, lively political melodramas like Spike Lee. Sep 14, 2018 Full Review Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com It's just about perfect in balance of tone, and it's easily Spike Lee's best film in years. Rated: A Aug 31, 2018 Full Review KT Mahe For Your Reference Podcast Spike Lee will remain a leader in cinematic cultural commentary but that very potency was less present in BlacKkKlansman. While the messaging is still assured and deliberate, perhaps this film is set to the temperature of those in need of it. Rated: 4.5/5 Feb 26, 2025 Full Review Oti For Your Reference Podcast No one does it like Spike. BlacKkKlansman is sharp, powerful, and unapologetic. The sudden kumbayah felt too neat, but John David Washington is flawless. The messaging is exactly what we’ve come to expect from Spike—Black is beautiful, Black is powerful. Rated: 4.5/5 Feb 26, 2025 Full Review Joshua Stevens Loud and Clear Reviews Spike Lee’s power is on full display in his film BlacKkKlansman, a gut-punch comedy drama that uses the past to critique the present (and possibly future). Mate P ***SPOILERS*** BlacKkKlansman is a great film about the extremes. The plot is intriguing and the fact that it's based on truth, is devastating. The characters are also interesting and complex enough. The protagonists are really awesome characters. I feel like there was a lack of normality, and by that I mean there were very few sane people in that neighbourhood. The dialogues are amazingly-written and surprisingly funny sometimes. The ending montage has some powerful imagery, but I'm not the biggest fan of connecting movies directly to modern politics. I like it more when they leave it for the audience to make the connections. I loved the direction's style and the cinematography. The lighting is gorgeous and there are some tense scenes where the Dutch angle is the cherry on top. The cast is good and the acting is wonderul. I loved both John David Washington and Adam Driver as the leads. I also loved the production design, the sets felt perfectly natural for the 70s. BlacKkKlansman has heavy themes, but it's light-hearted dialogues make it an absolutely great watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/04/25 Full Review Ronald R Great Movie!!! Based on a True Story!!! Rated R for Language Throughout, Disturbing/Violent Material, Racial Epithets and Some Sexual References!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/08/25 Full Review Marc Z Truth is Stranger Than Fiction. This story proves that adage. Made, not coincidentally, during the first Trump term , this movie really highlights the ridiculous and danger of extremist racial politics. Spike Lee has done a good job of telling a completing frightening story is a serious, but very watchable format. The acting is amazing in this movie from Adam Driver, Topher Grace, Laura Harrier, and John David Washington. The filmmaking, the costumes, the settings, and the cinematography are all worthy of the critical praise this movie received. The supporting cast is great. The lessons are so important.
