Critics Consensus

Blackthorn invites comparisons to a classic Western -- and survives, thanks largely to a charismatic performance by a well-chosen Sam Shepard.

Stanley Kauffmann The New Republic This story, parboiled out of one of the most memorable Westerns, is supported all the way by Gil's directing. Jun 19, 2013 Full Review Andrew Pulver Guardian Blackthorn is a handsomely mounted film, with many an awesome vista and rolling plain, but compared to the quicksilver brilliance of its predecessors, it comes off as irredeemably minor. Rated: 2/5 Apr 12, 2012 Full Review Antonia Quirke Financial Times It feels as unique as the way the ageing Shepard's eyes appear weirdly independent of the rest of him. He's a bird of prey gazing through the holes in a crumbling wall. Rated: 3/5 Apr 12, 2012 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The film is worth seeking out for Shepard and Rea’s performances. Rated: 3/4 Mar 7, 2023 Full Review Jordan M. Smith IONCINEMA.com It is an enjoyable western set within a non-traditional location that helps breathe new life into a genre that's long been on life support. Nov 19, 2020 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com While the Bolivian landscape is certainly a sight to behold, Blackthorn feels like a cheap attempt at invigorating interest by exploiting a classic film character. Logan D Butch Cassidy and Sundance survived the infamous shootout and the former now lives in Bolivia under the name of James Blackthorn. When he learns his son needs him, he prepares to leave but gets caught up in one more theft. With the backdrop of the beautifully stark landscapes of Bolivia, this is a real treat of a Western. Same Shepherd as Blackthorn is thoroughly the draw of this tale, charming in his grizzled handling of the character, evoking sympathy for his ethics. For those looking for something akin to old school Westerns, this is it. My blond moment. I'd heard the name of a playwright named Sam Shepherd and knew the actor. I never realized they were the same person. I also didn't know he lived in KY about an hour away from me, where he owned a farm and died in 2017 at the age of 73. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review L G 1st watch of this good movie. glad i gave it a Click on Max. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review CatKing Magnificent. A true Western. Some people don't like it because of it's slow pace but I think it flowed just fine. The acting is amazing, the scenery is beautiful and the story....if you just let it lead, will take you on a journey that you will want to travel again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/26/23 Full Review jelisije j Usually I'm against alterations to actual historical figures but this film manages to respect the legend of Butch Cassidy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Sam Shepard is excellent in this fictional western directed by Mateo Gil. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm not sure that I could fully appreciate this movie since I'm not a big Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid fan, and have only seen that classic film once. But I definitely appreciated the incredible cinematography and production design of this modern western. And I loved Sam Shepard's performance. I just didn't feel like there was much of a story that meant much of anything. The movie just kind of meanders through a few days over a few miles and then ends. I may revisit this one again down the road and see if something more comes to me from it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Read all reviews
