What to Know

Critics Consensus

Li's characters are imperfectly drawn, and the film follows a somewhat problematic arc, but Blind Mountain is nonetheless deeply compelling viewing.

Addiego San Francisco Chronicle It's a harsh portrait of a brutal segment of society, only relieved by an occasional handsome landscape shot (filmed in the Shaanxi province) that makes Bai's plight all the more compelling. Rated: 3/4 Jul 11, 2008 Full Review Leo Goldsmith Reverse Shot With its complex (and, at times, deeply problematic) intersection of an educated outsider with the stubborn realities of rural life, Blind Mountain explicitly harkens back to those classic works from the Fifth Generation of Chinese filmmakers, like Yellow Aug 8, 2009 Full Review Nora Lee Mandel Film-Forward.com Effective at showing how hard it is for even a spirited and educated woman to escape a community complicit in a brutal arranged marriage, but few characters have complexity. Audience Member Years later, this film is still in my mind. The raw storytelling sets it apart from other movies that tackle the same issues. Raw, that's the word that best describe it. Proceed with caution. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member A grim portrayal of life in China. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member A grim story about a young woman being kidnapped and forced into marrige. Very realistic and sad stuff that are acted out by non-actors to make it super realistic. Semi-tense at all times and the nerve is gutwrenching and raw. Some interesting turns as well, even if they are quite easy to figure. It looks all right without having the greatest imagery or camera work. It feels genuine if anyting. A dark flick that's provoking and shocking. Especially since things like this actually happen. 7.5 out of 10 eggs. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Chinese director Li Yang has courage to expose social problems in modern-day China. I was impressed by his first feature (Blind Shaft), and this movie is a strong follow-up. While the theme may not sound particularly appealing to Western audiences, make no mistake - this is an excellent movie, with gritty realism, convincing performances (despite featuring mostly non-actors) and a tense plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It leaves a haunting impression for days to come. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This film was crazy! Heartbreaking to think that this happens in real life.... real tragedy :-( Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Such a sad but true movie.... Difficult for me to finish watching it ... :( Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Read all reviews
