Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) A very powerful film made on a particularly small budget. Jan 12, 2021 Full Review Carlos Aguilar RogerEbert.com A movie with plenty of small portions that communicate thought-provoking ideas and gripping melees but without a substantial human anchor. Rated: 2.5/4 Jan 8, 2021 Full Review Glenn Kenny New York Times Its good-taste approach to warfare, along with its treacly music score by Lolita Ritmanis, underscores what seems its main reason for being: a relentless "Go, Latvia!" agenda... Jan 7, 2021 Full Review Carson Timar ButteredPopcorn This is an emotional and grounded film that engages the audience with a thematic weight only to shockingly snap them into the horrors of the reality it is portraying. Rated: A- Jul 18, 2022 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Strip away the national trappings and this is an old, old story, but director Dzintars Dreibergs, despite working with a tiny budget, tells it well. Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 16, 2021 Full Review Soham Gadre Film Inquiry It's a cliché in the truest sense, taking the façade of a rousing Spielbergian drama with none of its spirit, and the ethereal visual design of a Malick film with none of its ardor. John H Good story and perfoances but a bit disjointed. Still well worth watching . No many WWI war movies from the Latvian /Russian side in the West Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/24 Full Review Gareth P I loved this film, it really showed the horror of the First World War in Eastern Europe. To me it felt like you were on the journey with the very young soldier, only there fighting because of his veteran father's need for revenge over the death of his wife. I never felt sorry for him, it was horrific what he went through but I felt it was a journey that needed to be finished although the agony of his losses kept coming. There were small moments of joy and tenderness that showed what really matters when life can't get any worse. However, it also showed how a life can be lost without a blink of a eye from those who witness it. Oto Brantevics was superb as the young soldier with an excellent cast in support. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/21/23 Full Review Roberts S Blizzard of Souls is a visually stunning war drama that captures the harsh realities of World War I from a unique perspective. The film's cinematography is impressive, and the battle scenes are intense and brutal Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/18/23 Full Review ron t Made by and in Latvia this is very surprising. The quality is comparable to Hollywood even though it is made on a low budget. I didn't know I was gonna be so intrigued when watching it. I did some research and found out that this is one of the best ww1 movies created, so this is definitely a must watch! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Quite exceptional, Even if the geopolitical side is little put forward, Blizzard of Souls exudes in an apparent simplicity a very great human force and brings its reflection on the absurdity of the war machine Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review william d A decent enough war movie that touches on all the inherent cliches. Worth watching if for no other reason than there are so few WWI movies centered on the eastern front. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
