Audience Member My first impression was of Bresson being transported to Portugal. The film is a little amateurish yet with solid potential.Pedro Costa seems like the sort of film-maker who scores top grades at film school and in film history, absorbing the lessons well, yet all that doesn't seem to do enough for me. A fotografia fantástica e argumento interessante. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member Portugese Pedro Costa's anstonishing debut echoes Bresson and Tarkovsky with a hint of Ray's "Rebel Without A Cause", gut-twisting with the mood in the scenery, and some of the best sharp-contrast black and white I've ever seen. It can rival Mario Bava's "Black Sunday" for that. Was it really made in 1989? I guess that makes it as timeless as it should be. A single father of 2 sons is very ill and dies in his sleep, before he dies, he tells his older son to not tell the younger son if the inevitable were to happen. With the two having to live without parents, the two try to survive, with the help of the older brother's girlfriend. But with debt-collectors, and ex-girlfriend, and an uncle trying to find out the real deal, things get torn apart for the worst.... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Not very indicative of the style he'd later develop, but an interesting early feature.
