Blood and wine should never mix Jack Nicholson, Stephen Dorff, Jennifer Lopez, and Michael Caine Victor Spanksy, a philandering husband, Alex Gates, an angry stepson Jason, and an illegal immigrant, Gabby make a up a seething stew of jealousy, greed and ambition which can only be assuaged by a million-dollar diamond necklace After burning through his wife's fortune, Gates, who is desperate to run away with Gabby who is also a nanny, arranges the theft with Spansky, unaware of his stepson's intent to ruin him Gates then goes too far with his wife ultimately with her leaving him along with Jason and the necklace Gates and Spanksy set out to destroy them both The movie is pretty good with its thrills, there's never a dull moment when you're in suspense seeing Jason try to outmatch his stepfather The music adds to enliven the chase When it gets violent it's violent seeing how far each is willing to go for the jewels It stinks Caine leaves the picture at the 82 min mark and I wish Lopez was more involved as far as the love interest for a majority of the plot But the heist stuff is cool and these actors make it pretty raw A good mixture of not-too-overwhelming melodrama and staples of film noir A more than average thriller with intelligence

A modern noir. An entertaining couple of hours with a knock-out cast -- Michael Caine! Jack Nicholson! Judy Davis! and Jennifer Lopez isn't bad either.

This was a sleeper when released, but turns out to have been an excellent thriller. The pacing is taught, the twists and turns really keep you on the edge of your seat. The one drawback is the high-handed musical score. Please give this overlooked movie a try, and try to tune out the lush soundtrack. The story, the actors and the sets are all superb. This is a fine crime film with dysfunctional-family drama to boot.
