Matthew Monagle Austin Chronicle Barnaby's film rejects the default white gaze of so many horror films, choosing to tell a story through an unapologetically Indigenous lens. Rated: 3.5/5 May 12, 2020 Full Review Alexandra Heller-Nicholas The Blue Lenses Blood Quantum seamlessly balances two very different things; it's proudly and unambiguously political, while simultaneously being just a banger of genre film. May 12, 2020 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Pajiba Filmmaker Jeff Barnaby is taking aim at colonization and the subjugation of native and indigenous peoples, and he's splattering those considerations with a hot burst of arterial blood. May 9, 2020 Full Review Ethan Gordon InSession Film Even though Blood Quantum was a solid swing at reviving them, zombies movies will have to stay dead for now. Rated: C Mar 21, 2024 Full Review Salome Gonstad Comic Years Befitting its title, this movie is awash in blood, and it isn't afraid to show us some truly gnarly images. I just wish it'd gone as far with the social commentary. tm11999 M the canaduh gov't gives the paddywack tribe some money to make a movie and join society and all they can do is produce a hate whitey zombie flick where they proceed to cut off their noses to spite their face. no explanation as to why anything in this crapfest, just a running "we really won't ever forget we were conquered" diatribe against the townies. the pendulum is swinging the other way now so maybe we won't have to be reminded every minute that the white man is evil and bad. run away. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review eva j The concept was cool but the acting ruined it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review Diana S There are a lot of good story elements here, and the twist on this (tired) genre is unique. The acting and direction came across, to me at least, as stilted, which unfortunately ruined the film for me. Still, there are so few films about indigenous cultures, it gets a few points from me for that alone. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/25/24 Full Review Connor C Saw this near the top of RTs top Zombie films - wish i'd seen the audience rating as I would've saved my time. I can't get over the absolutely awful acting, didn't believe any of it. I don't recommend. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/09/24 Full Review g j I really wanted to like this but unfortunately it just... sucks. Generic plot with poor pacing and structure, cringingly bad acting, and flat, uninspired camerawork. The premise had so much potential. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/24 Full Review Joshua Y Terrible pacing both from a cinematography standpoint, and a video editing standpoint. And I've been a professional editor for 20 years. Most of the shots are unmotivated and meant to look artsy, but since they have no meaning behind them, they fall flat. An example would be the overuse of Dutch camera angles during the opening credits. Another example is the Joss character. When we first see her, instead of establishing the character in any sort of way, or getting us to feel any emotional connection to her, we barely even see her face. But we see a god shot of her tea which has no significance at all. Even medium close-up of her in a particular mood would help. But they seem to be obsessed with B roll shots in the beginning more so than character driven or story development shots. When writing the script, they also forgot that the characters each need their own distinct personality. They aren't just there to deliver lines. A lot of the acting is quite bad except for a few characters. This is a movie where the finished screenplay draft should've been the rough draft and given to a more seasoned writer and director. They would have had to do several dialogue passes along with a bunch of other things, but the premise would've been worth it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/24 Full Review Read all reviews
