Critics Consensus

Smart, stripped-down, and thrillingly grim, Blue Ruin proves that a well-told revenge story can still leave its audience on the edge of their seat.

Ann Hornaday Washington Post The world doesn't need another empty genre exercise. But as Blue Ruin reminds us, it can always use more filmmakers of Saulnier's resourcefulness, sensitivity and quiet assurance. Rated: 4/4 Jan 5, 2015 Full Review Keith Staskiewicz Entertainment Weekly With the same brand of realist irony the Coens used to cool down Blood Simple, writer-director Jeremy Saulnier slows the genre's heartbeat to gripping effect. Rated: A Jan 5, 2015 Full Review Kate Muir Times (UK) Blue Ruin starts promisingly with a hairy hobo living in a blue, rusty, bullet-holed Pontiac on a Delaware beach. Rated: 3/5 Jan 5, 2015 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies I love being taken for a ride and not knowing what lies ahead, especially in a movie centered around deep, moody suspense. “Blue Ruin” took me for that ride, and I was completely invested until the very end. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Dark and devoid of excess plot, Blue Ruin tells a revenge tale filled with superbly tuned suspense and clean, efficient filmmaking. Rated: 3.5/4 Aug 5, 2022 Full Review Michael J. Casey Michael J. Cinema Creates a level of paranoia by telling this tale primarily in close-ups and toying with focal depth. Jeremy S Tertible title, brilliant movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/02/24 Full Review Richard G Its good but a little overrated in my opinion. It doesn't strike a particularly bold tone. The establishing shots and colors don't do much for the story telling and it doesn't really compare to other classics of the genre in that regard. Acting is good and the characters are really interesting and believable. Its pretty good. Its above average. Its not a classic. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/22/24 Full Review SETH J Audience score should be way higher. This movie is amazing. The emotion and story are so realistic. Perfect ending Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/05/24 Full Review eric g Wasn't a big fan the first few times I watched it. Recently gave it another chance and I get it now. Damn this movie is brutal Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/26/24 Full Review steve d Solid movie. I liked it very much. Solid acting. Interesting characters. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Kyle J Terrific new idea for an intense and interesting revenge story. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/17/24 Full Review Read all reviews
