Critics Consensus

Smart, stripped-down, and thrillingly grim, Blue Ruin proves that a well-told revenge story can still leave its audience on the edge of their seat.

The world doesn't need another empty genre exercise. But as Blue Ruin reminds us, it can always use more filmmakers of Saulnier's resourcefulness, sensitivity and quiet assurance. Go to Full Review

With the same brand of realist irony the Coens used to cool down Blood Simple, writer-director Jeremy Saulnier slows the genre's heartbeat to gripping effect. Go to Full Review

Blue Ruin starts promisingly with a hairy hobo living in a blue, rusty, bullet-holed Pontiac on a Delaware beach. Go to Full Review

We see a pretty massive physical transformation in Dwight as well as a metaphorical one that was pretty fascinating. Go to Full Review

I love being taken for a ride and not knowing what lies ahead, especially in a movie centered around deep, moody suspense. “Blue Ruin” took me for that ride, and I was completely invested until the very end. Go to Full Review

Ace H @ACEofbase Jan 3 Not sure how these so called experts on here can sleep giving this movie a 96 rating? I think the var has definitely been lowered or people today have just forgotten what actually qualifies for a quality film. The main character in this movie more plays a homeless vagrant then changes his look to a 35 year old middle school assistant principal then on a turn becomes Rambo? The story line is ok but the execution is sloppy and this character Leaves more tracks easier to follow than a snail. I for one have not compromised my opinion on what qualifies for a quality film just due to the fact that these movies are far and few these days, no I will not lower the bar even though that apparently is the trendy thing to do, I for one still remember what qualified for a 96 rating and these one indeed is not one of them. See more L W. @phillybird52 Dec 29 Quirky independent movie that I really enjoyed See more Bob B. @Bloopinblue25 Nov 8 I saw this a few years ago, but being a child of ADHD I kept turning the channel and never really watched it fully. It’s called flicking the channel changer anyways ride fund the beginning. It could’ve been similar to a couple of events in my life not about the killing part but sleeping in the car. I never run through garbage for food, but I can see how somebody might if they were hungry enough although I would never do it myself I would think of something more creative like working at a Deadpool or something like that, but whoever wrote this story is very creative. I don’t know where his mind or imagination came from. Did he live these experiences or are they taken from other movies but yes, definitely awesome. Not much of a music score which it makes it more suspenseful and adds to the creativity all in all this is definitely a four star movie and should be recognized as a great cult film if you wish. kudos! See more Art W Nov 1 I'm a fan of revenge films in general and i was not disappointed with this one. The story is smart, fast paced, and has some unexpected twists.. the bad guys get theirs, that's for sure, but during it, the good guy damn near sacrifices all he cares about. Definitely worthwhile here... unpredictable, well acted, and just a kick ass story . I'm always thrilled when i watch a film i'd never heard of before stumbling on it on some Instagram movie recommendation reel and finding it memorable and fun. See more Mackenzie A @Mackenz Aug 28 Jeremy Saulnier's "Blue Ruin" is a small, quiet film brimming with smart directorial decisions. See more Thinking M @Gary-7 Aug 28 A serious downer—be forewarned. Tragic, sad and ultimately meaningful in its message that revenge is a serious mistake, especially when you don’t know who to be vengeful toward. 2 stars for that message. Otherwise, I wish I had not watched it. See more Read all reviews
