Unique enough to overcome its weaknesses, this manages to stick it to both mainstream conformity and the anti-establishment movement. Go to Full Review

…(its) credentials as an offbeat, counter-cultural B movie are impeccable; there’s fights, car-chases and a healthy dose of cynicism… a well-scripted, memorable little film that looks back to the past to portray how we got to a pre-ruined future… Go to Full Review

The plot is honestly a bit murky-but the premise is interesting enough to start making you paranoid. Go to Full Review

Allan C Jun 15 BLUE SUNSHINE is a cult oddity I'd heard about for years but never watched. I'd seen the trailer, which featured LSD experiments, cults, 70s swinger parties, disco clubs, corrupt politicians, and, most notably, seemingly ordinary men and women revealing shaved heads before killing everyone around them. Zalman King plays the main character, whose friend group experiences a series of murders, which he begins to investigate. I expected the film to be far more trippy and surreal, but it unfolds in a very conventional manner. It does have a few stylish moments here and there, but I was hoping for something more along the lines of Panos Cosmatos' MANDY when it plays out more like a TV mystery of the week. For a story about seemingly ordinary moms, dads, office workers, etc., losing their hair and suddenly becoming psychotic killers, you'd expect it to be a completely bonkers film. Outside of a few moments, I might as well have been watching an episode of KOLCHAK, which isn't a bad thing, but I was expecting THE VISITOR or THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH. That the film never really cuts loose is the film's major weakness. The other main deficit is Zalman King as the lead actor, who is terrible. He's wooden and never believable. He very nearly ruins the film, but interestingly, in real life, King left acting and would go on to produce the popular mainstream softcore films 9 1/2 WEEKS, TWO MOON JUNCTION, WILD ORCHID, and THE RED SHOE DIARIES. I will give the film credit that when the killers strike, BLUE SUNSHINE comes to life for a short time, and the film's ending almost lives up to being the bonkers film I was expecting, featuring a final showdown in a discotheque, which also happens to be locked at a mall, which is also pretty hilarious. Not for all tastes, to say the least, and I realize I complained more about the film than complimented it, but I did enjoy it and will rewatch it at some point. It's definitely worth checking out for cult aficionados.   See more B P May 20 Blue Sunshine isn’t very psychedelic for a movie about people going crazy on LSD. It’s not likely to blow any minds, and the horror is basic, at best. See more Matthew D 10/28/2021 The movie is great; a classic example of a 70's paranoid conspiracy thriller with the added fun of science fiction and horror elements. The DVD also comes with a satiric short called The Ringer that is arguably better than the movie itself! See more 04/25/2020 Refreshingly distinctive from beginning to end, Blue Sunshine's unsettling, minimalist score and extremely disturbing bursts of madness and violence are anchored by convincing performances within a relatively believable story. A unique gem to be sure. See more delysid d 12/10/2017 hilarious movie, LSD can make you go insane and your hair fall out. so watch out! See more 01/30/2016 A bit of an underrated classic. It has a dedicated fan base, but it never seems to be mentioned in the company of other late 70's horror classics like "Dawn of the Dead" or "Phantasm". It's perhaps not quite as good as those films. In particular, I don't think Zalman King is quite up to the task here. In all the films I've seen him in, he registers exactly one emotion: scowly brooding. In films where he's a villain, it kind of works. Here it has a tendency to drag the film down a bit. See more Read all reviews
