The Gods (2014)
The film is based on the biography of the famous cardiac surgeon Zbigniew Religa. The film was directed by Łukasz Palkowski. It stars Tomasz Kot as Zbigniew Religa, Piotr Głowacki as Marian Zembala, Magdalena Czerwińska as Anna Religa, Rafał Zawierucha as Romuald Cichoń. It was the winner of seven national Eagle Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Lead Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Supporting Actor.
It is based on a true story of how the legendary cardiac surgeon Zbigniew Religa overcame the obstacles standing in his way to undergo heart transplant surgery in Poland. The film is set in the 1980s in Poland.
Initially, the film was made in Masuria and Silesia, but the shooting was completed at the Wolski Hospital in Warsaw, which imitated a cardiac surgery clinic in Zabrze.
Zbigniew Religa is an ambitious, young cardiac surgeon who is going to perform the first heart transplant operation. In the realities of communist Poland, however, it is an extremely difficult task. To achieve this target, Religa will have to break the resistance of his older colleagues and party representatives. Religion still has more problems, family troubles, and another patient who was operated on. However, he manages to regain his strength and proves his greatness.
I strongly recommend The Gods. It has biography drama, a great plot good soundtrack. An inspiring, charismatic hero, carrying a positive message - probably a rarity in Polish cinema.

I wish it was 15 minutes longer by the end. It would be
satisfying.

A charismatic central character and vivid period and cultural specificity makes this biopic quite watchable, even if there aren't any real surprises.

I never thought a biopic on the famous cardiologist, who performed the first heart transplant in Poland, would be just as engaging and enjoyable. Tomasz Kot glides through the role of Dr. Zbigniew Religa, with a piercing know-it-all look, the smug attitude of Dr. Gregory House (the character), and the gait of Joker from "The Dark Knight". Set in the 1980s, the movie takes the audience through the emotional and bureaucratic struggle faced by Dr. Religa and his colleagues to breathe life into a building in shambles and transform it into a haven of medical achievements. The near absence of blood and tears makes this movie palatable. The pleasant, orchestral background music score and gentle comedy gel in well with the tone of the movie. The pace is well-maintained throughout, keeping the viewers engaged and hooked. Personally, I couldn't care any lesser about a couple of cheesy scenes, which I think were unnecessary. The entire team have done a cracking job ... and Tomasz Kot, you tall, charming, freak of nature.. Take a bow! Overall, a brilliant movie... highly recommended!
