Audience Member Larry Cohen is one of my favorite low budget genre directors because he often mixes interesting ideas and social commentary in a way that also manages to hit all the right genre notes, whether he's doing horror, westerns, sci-fi or blaxploitation. This pictures doesn't fall neatly into a particular genre. In this film, Yaphet Kotto is a criminal who breaks into the house of a rich white couple, only to be discovered. He then holds the couple hostage and forces the husband to go get money while he keeps his wife hostage. Since this is a Larry Cohen written and directed script, things don't play out quite like you'd expect. Andrew Duggan is the husband and Joyce Van Patten are good the couple in a loveless marriage, but steals the show as the titular Bone. A must see for b-picture and Cohen fans. I can't believe it took me so long to watch this picture of his. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member BONE is a totally wacked out 70s faux sunny satirical noir from the ever demented mind of my fave Larry Cohen. It's DOUBLE INDEMNITY on acid. It will leave you laughing, shocked and shaken. Just like a good film should. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a movie that could only be made between 1968 and 1973. That 5 year period saw something really change in American art and I hope we see something like that again. That being said, this is a noble experiment that fails to deliver. When performing satire it is easy to become heavy handed and this movie has fists of lead. Very good performances as it examines the morals of consumerism and the lies we tell about our personal lives, but in the end it's a bit ponderous. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Wow. Just... wow. Made in 1970, but still a timely and unflinching movie about racism in this country and the twisted cultural fantasies that surround it. This weird little movie is worth a watch! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member This offensive but effective 60's 'black' comedy sinks its teeth into issues of race, class, and gender with plenty of skill and also contains Yaphet Kotto's best acting work. Pauline Kael New Yorker The picture was written, produced, and directed by Larry Cohen, who mated the lurid exploitation film with a high-pitched attack on hypocrisy and American values. But his concept is a biting and clever one, his insights fresh and bold, his characters refreshing. Jun 12, 2020 Full Review Fernando F.
