What to Know

Critics Consensus

Bonhoeffer more or less gets the job done as a righteous thriller, but its glossy treatment of history flattens this remarkable true story into a formulaic matinee.

John Anderson America Magazine No, only when “Bonhoeffer” becomes an adventure does the film gain traction and become not just a celebration of conscience and courage but a thriller. Nov 22, 2024 Full Review Joe Leydon Variety Dassler shrewdly portrays Bonhoeffer with carefully calibrated measures of zeal, sincerity, boldness and, on occasion, terror. Nov 22, 2024 Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News It’s a fascinating but sad story about sacrifice and staying true to your moral beliefs and faith, a potent message that we need to hear time and again. Rated: 3/4 Nov 19, 2024 Full Review Rick Bentley KGET-TV (Bakersfield, CA) A plodding script, dullish leading actor and an approach to cinematography that is depressingly dark leave this film far short of its high potential. John H Engaging and at times enjoyable, but overall this film uses very thick strokes of paint from the brush. Felt like I imagine Lifetime or Hallmark movies would be like. I went to see the story of his life and I got what I wanted from it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/20/24 Full Review Carol s Story worthy of an award-winning movie but this one missed the mark. Terrible acting all around. I t was hard for me to engage the characters because i was distracted by the constant reminder that i was watching 'acting'. Bonhoeffer should have been a sympathetic character but i couldn't relate to him. I wasn't drawn at all by his backstory. It didn't feel relavant (but it was). In many cases the cinematography felt gratitudeous. Several scenes i was wondering what the purpose was or why the actors were positioned precisely that way. Very distracting Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/19/24 Full Review Rodney This is my first time hearing the Bonhoeffer story, so I went in not knowing what to expect. The movie was put together very well, from the background music to the leaves rustling hard in the wind. I really felt immersed in the experience. I especially enjoyed the sound of the echoes in the cathedral. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Ron J Entertaining history that teaches us a lesson for today. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Jumper23 I found it accurate. The story line followed Bonhoeffer's life as well as a number of parallel events in the bible. The movie was realistic. Good cinematography. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Edward S Excellent movie and portrayal of an exceptionally important figure from WWII and today. For a time such as this! (Warning: the dialogue can be difficult to hear, especially with some of the accents. I do wish theaters turned on the closed caption options!)
