      Movie Info

Academic overachievers Amy and Molly thought keeping their noses to the grindstone gave them a leg up on their high school peers. But on the eve of graduation, the best friends suddenly realize that they may have missed out on the special moments of their teenage years. Determined to make up for lost time, the girls decide to cram four years of not-to-be missed fun into one night -- a chaotic adventure that no amount of book smarts could prepare them for.

The cast and concept are much better than the script and direction. (At least four people worked on the script, not a good sign.) Props to legendary casting director, Allison Jones who hits aces with a diverse group young adult cast members. Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein lead the way of likable performers. The arc of their characters' friendship is the most interesting thread of Olivia Wilde's directing debut. Their journey, though, through a pre-graduation night of seeking a party and trying to experience their first night of letting loose, is... meh. Their are several good belly laughs and the Dever character's quest to experience her first sexual encounter help push this movie into recommendation territory.

The focus on two young female characters isn't the most radical thing here, its that nearly every character ends up transcending the false perceptions held by their peers and the audience.

Booksmart is stylishly directed and genuine to the core. This coming-of-age/high-school film is hysterical, charming and surprisingly sincere overall thanks to its outstanding leads in Dever and Feldstein, its colorful supporting cast and unique vision from first-time-director, Olivia Wilde; making for one of the best this year and this decade. 4.55/5

What utter rubbish. Worst movie of this year, this decade, this millennium. In fact worst movie ever. If this is anything like what high school is these days then I truly weep for the future. 97% on the t-meter...I don't think so. Olivia Wide should never direct another movie ever (7-27-19)
