After winning a contest to go to Hollywood, Calif., Canadian actress Wanda Gale (Pat Paterson) falls for the promises of con man Smoothie (Spencer Tracy) and his partner, Limey (Herbert Mundin). Concocting a story that Wanda is the daughter of a British lord, impersonated by Limey, Smoothie gets Wanda noticed by cynical, drunken director Hal Reed (John Boles). After Smoothie and Limey blackmail Hal, he romances Wanda and makes her a star in his films -- prompting unexpected jealousy in Smoothie.
