arvind s Amal Neerad's films as a director have just gotten better with time. His debut was groundbreaking for Malayalam cinema at that time after which he tried more or less the same style over actual substance for a few films. His last movie, Bheeshma Parvam is his best work till date. Bougainvillea is a mystery thriller with a story that is common to most mystery novels (script by author Lajo Jose). Set in Idukki, Bougainvillea is the story of Reethu, who suffers from amnesia (caused by a car accident) and as she frequently tends to forget things, she maintains a diary to jog her memory. Her husband, Royce is a doctor. When a few girls go missing, the police come knocking as Reethu is the last person that one of the girls was seen with. Bougainvillea is actress Jyothirmayi's comeback film. She plays Reethu, the heart & soul of this film. Her performance is the highlight of this film, with Kunchacko Boban revealing a side of him that we haven't yet experienced. Srinda & Veena Nandakumar give it their best. Fahadh's casting is questionable as his talents are not required here. Sushin Shyam's final project (for a while) is brilliant. It captures the mood of a mystery thriller & the chilly atmosphere of the hill station. Bougainvillea starts slow but it picks up pace eventually and delivers a brilliant final act. Not Amal Neerad's best but among my top 3 Amal Neerad movies.
