      Critics Consensus

Boys and Girls feels like a cheap rip-off of When Harry Met Sally. The predictable and stale story fails to engage.

jarkece h I actually think it was ahead of its time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/24 Full Review danielle r Cheeseburger. With extra cringe. Claire Forlani's character was really unlikeable for me. (Also, this is a poorly named movie; sounds like it's about a group of young people, but it's really just about the main couple- the others are barely necessary. I feel like they just went with the working title.) Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Ryan K Someone may be prone to hate both genders after seeing this obnoxious hackneyed poor excuse of a lust (not love) story. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/28/21 Full Review Audience Member "Boys and Girls" is a film about a boy named Ryan who meets a girl, Jennifer, on an airplane when both are young. We then see the older Ryan (Freddie Prinze Jr.) and the older Jennifer (Claire Forlani) meet several years later. At first, it doesn't seem that they get along too well, but when they get to college, they become friends and it appears they might be something more. Ryan dates Jennifer's roommate (Amanda Detmer) for a bit, but Jennifer is given the task of breaking up with Ryan on her roommate's behalf, unaware that Ryan is the guy her friend has been dating. There is a weird moment when Ryan blinds himself as Jennifer is doing deed, and from that moment, a complicated relationship has developed between the two. "Boys and Girls" isn't a great film by any means, but I think it is enjoyable for what it is. There isn't much substance but it is a cute story with cute leads. The film also stars Jason Biggs as Ryan's buddy. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Honestly, it's a film for people who stay up at night watching random rom-coms about implausible and unrealistic love. Is the acting amazing? No. Is it well written? Not really. But it's still enjoyable as a rom-com for single people who want to believe in love. I'd watch it if you like that sort of thing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I don't care what anyone says, I thoroughly enjoyed this film. The character development was great. Jason Biggs did an awesome job of portraying what a lot of guys go thru. The relationship between the 2 main characters is complicated and entertaining as the film progresses. The scenery/filmography was so good I feel inspired to visit the filming locations. I love the way everyone was dressed. And it captures the innocence of the 90s. 5 Stars Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader The cast is so charming and assured that it puts across most of this with a reasonable amount of conviction. Mar 6, 2007 Full Review Kimberley Jones Austin Chronicle It's a paint-by-numbers romantic comedy, but without the heart or laughs to make it work. Rated: 1/5 Mar 10, 2003 Full Review Rick Groen Globe and Mail This is less a movie than a casting call -- just round up a crowd of pretty young faces, fresh yet still familiar, and call it a job well done. Rated: 1.5/4 Mar 19, 2002 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...a decent-enough premise that is, for the most part, employed to woefully uninvolving and underwhelming effect... Rated: 2/4 Jan 12, 2022 Full Review Beth Pratt Common Sense Media Silly star crossed sex obsessed love flick. Rated: 2/5 Jan 1, 2011 Full Review Michael Dequina TheMovieReport.com Prinze still delivers the faceless everyman performance he's given in his last few--make that all--his films.
