Critics Consensus

Overblown in the best sense of the word, Francis Ford Coppola's vision of Bram Stoker's Dracula rescues the character from decades of campy interpretations -- and features some terrific performances to boot.

Jay Carr Boston Globe This Dracula is only eyeball-deep, a series of opulent sensory jolts, drained of real emotion; in effect, it's a two-hour trailer for a film that never arrives. Sep 26, 2024 Full Review Kenneth Turan Los Angeles Times No matter what else you do with it, a Dracula that cannot manage to be more scary than silly is as pitilessly doomed as that elegant old Transylvanian himself. Sep 26, 2024 Full Review Steven Rea Philadelphia Inquirer Truly, there is too much going on here, and the results are exhausting. At the same time, the film's very busyness is part of Dracula's undeniable charm. If there is glory in excess, Coppola's movie is glorious. Rated: 3/4 Sep 26, 2024 Full Review Megan Fisher Loud and Clear Reviews To put it simply, Bram Stoker’s Dracula has a bad case of style over substance. Jan 11, 2025 Full Review Cody Dericks Next Best Picture Like the powers of the mythical creatures, the film occasionally ignores logic, instead emphasizing emotion and the instinctual impressions that the stunning visuals bring out in the audience. It’s impossible not to give in to its charms. Rated: 9/10 Nov 1, 2024 Full Review Alan Jones Radio Times As the tired count who has overdosed on immortality, Gary Oldman's towering performance holds centre stage and burns itself into the memory. jazz Even 30 years after, best Dracula movie ever! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/28/22 Full Review Jenn I love this movie so much! It’s the best Dracula movie. A tragic love story - a love across time. Gary Oldman is amazing. Great cast with the exception of Keanu Reeves he sucks. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/28/22 Full Review Michelle A classic film on the big screen again. An experience not to miss. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/24/22 Full Review Rose G The best film I have ever seen! Best actors, so artistic and amazing director. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Rami A Yes, it may be old, yes, it may be cheesy, and yes, it may not be as exciting as his [Coppola's] other pictures, but it's still fun nonetheless. This is the type of horror film that shouldn't be taken seriously. The over-the-top performances, combined with the campy special effects, create a whimsical atmosphere that invites viewers to embrace the absurdity. It’s a reminder of how horror can blend with humor and nostalgia, offering a unique viewing experience that lightens the mood rather than inducing pure terror. Plus, there's something charming about the nostalgic aesthetic that transports you back to a different era of filmmaking. Overall, it’s a delightful throwback that can spark laughter and fond memories, making it a worthwhile watch for fans of the genre. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review N P "Dracula" is a mystical epic entering a one for the ages tragic romance amidst medieval times. Francis Ford Coppola, the director, pays great homage to the 20s and 30s films, "Noseferatu" and "Dracula", as well as classic Hollywood cinema via its memorable tone, practical effects, sweeping score, hand-made sets, unbelievable costumes and makeup, editing techniques, thorough writing, brilliant direction and so on. I still cannot believe all the immense effort the crew put in to create such a enigmatic visual experience. What separates Coppola's "Dracula" from its amazing predecessors - is Coppola's knack to go deeper into the anthology, fleshing out its story and characters, and actually, gives Count Dracula, the somewhat tacky and one-note mysterious vampyr, a meaningfully endearing backstory and beautiful empathy & heart. This is a testament to Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder's innate depth and chemistry, elevating the production immensely. In addition, Anthony Hopkins offers a wild presence to the crazed and highly intelligent unorthodox doctor, Van Helsing, and the supporting cast feel acquainted and suited their roles. In my opinion, having viewed the most well-known "Dracula" film adaptions, Coppola's "Dracula" is the must-see vampire epic that equally balances mystery, horror, romance and suspense in a visual and hearty fodder.
