Chad Collins Dread Central Jaco Bouwer’s Breathing In is a somber, evocative supernatural chamber piece with lots to show, little to say. Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2024 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Succeeds in creating and maintaining a chilly atmosphere of the sort rarely found in modern cinema. Rated: 4/5 Nov 2, 2023 Full Review Andrew Mack ScreenAnarchy Tremendous performances from its cast. ... A constant injection of a subtly dropped but very cool collection of horrific and terrifying imagery. This is one for fans of classic horror films from the post-war era of the 50s through 70s. Oct 26, 2023 Full Review Q.V. Hough Vague Visages “‘Breathing In’ effectively deconstructs themes of eternity, loyalty and slow strategy — it’s a timely tale about the horrors of war.” Oct 24, 2023 Full Review Nadine Whitney AWFJ.org Breathing In never completely reveals its hand and is better for it: a bewildering film of enigmatic beauty and shadowy apprehension. Tom L Sort of a witchcraft/vampire hybrid story but not really either in the traditional sense. The setting is the second Boer war in the early 1900s, but it has a timeless feel. This film is based on a play, and that fact is apparent in that the setting is one room almost the entire time, and the narrative is very character driven. The actors are fantastic, particularly Michelle Burgers, who plays a quietly sinister and somewhat unhinged older sorceress, who seemingly is creepily supernatural in nature. The horror of war remains at the edges throughout, and the rather brutal ending, even though it’s not directly related to the war, leaves the viewer with the impression of the senselessness of the enterprise. Things are a bit slow to get going at the beginning, but eventually the mood of creeping terror is ramped up in an imaginative, original, and sometimes surreal way. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/26/25 Full Review Troy M. Best folk horror since The Witch. Just imagine if this director had a real budget…and those actors were incredible. Blows mind that it was the first role in a movie for the 2 females. This movie and the director deserve a lot more recognition. Amazing Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/15/25 Full Review Audience Member This movie was pretty good. Bit of a slow burn, but erie AF. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/03/25 Full Review Kai H So much potential.... so many interesting plot points... and yet such shitty writing. It could have been a masterpiece of horror. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review Melissa M very atmospheric. It's a slow burn, but a really great story and the performance is particularly of the mother are very excellent. I like this. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/25 Full Review Marianne G This film really made an impression on me. A little slow starting but your patience will pay off if you stick with it. The tension and feeling of dread build steadily and the final act is terrific. Great performances and it really kept me guessing. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/25 Full Review Read all reviews
