Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Smug and unconvincing, this 2008 period drama from the Netherlands is the sort of movie that defines an era solely by its prejudices, on the implicit assumption that we'll applaud the central characters for their modern attitudes. Dec 13, 2011 Full Review Richard Nilsen Arizona Republic This very pretty melodrama is a rather ordinary entry. Rated: 3/5 Jul 14, 2011 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times The events in the plot are the stuff of soap opera, but the movie treats it seriously, and the acting is convincing enough that we forgive the story and begin to care about the characters. Rated: 3/4 Jun 30, 2011 Full Review Jack Fleischer Battleship Pretension Ignore the title, bring your reading glasses, and give it a try. Mar 24, 2021 Full Review Mattie Lucas From the Front Row It's a stubbornly pedestrian art house beach read, a yuppie book club selection of a film that entertains in the moment but is forgotten just as quickly. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 5, 2019 Full Review James Plath Movie Metropolis A straight-up romance that does a nice job of capturing the period, though the three lives of the main female characters stand out as obvious "types." Alain E Retains the attention of the viewer for the whole duration. It refers to an episode of Dutch history that obviously is unknown to outsiders. In 1953 there was a KLM flight from London to Auckland that succeeded in breaking a speed record. On board were several Dutch citizens who aimed to immigrate to New Zealand, often starting families in arranged marriages. The movie follows three girls and one man. Early on, decades later, the man dies and there is a reunion at his funeral. There are many flashbacks during the course of the narrative, very easy to follow. Overall the situations described do not appear exaggerated. I have two objections: there is an unwanted pregnancy and the single mother gives the child to her married friend who cannot have children. The adoption is to remain secret. The biological mother is Jewish. Years later gives to the child a Menorah. Hello? How you explain this? And a sex scene acted in a way that no regular people have intercourse. Overall we care about the protagonists and want to follow their life events. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/25 Full Review Audience Member This could have been an incredible story - instead, it's an undeveloped story that manages to cobble together a few good moments. Ended feeling incomplete and just sad. Augh... Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member I saw the trailer a while back and wasn't sure I would ever see this movie. But I'm glad I did. It was a wonderful story line, excellent, well-developed characters and quite a few unexpected outcomes. Worth seeing at least once. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Absolutely taken in by the characters, the time, the place and the stories. Well acted. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member A charming and engaging movie. Worth your time to see this...don't miss it. Currently (4/13) on netflix streamng. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I thought the photography was excellent. The story was a bit muddled but then I think most lives or at times.
