For alternative programming during the dog days of network TV, it's a winner.

This was pretty good. In the course of six episodes, this mini-series traces the issues confronting the post-Vatican II Catholic Church through the lives of six women at an Australian convent. The surprising things are that it manages to do so while making you care deeply about the fates of these women--and then it actually manages to wrap up the whole thing in a very satisfying way. I found the treatment of the issues to be very sensitive--not preachy one way or the other.
