With the stench of a Mormon version of a faith-based film, it feels like it's trying to (not-so-)subtly serve as a promotion of the LSD church. Luckily, it's so much better than that. It's a powerfully well-written tale about a small-town sheriff trying to keep his town from falling apart after a series of murder rocks his town. Even with the insipid visuals and amateurish acting, it's an endlessly engaging mystery with a stellar cast of characters, whose message of (self-)forgiveness is wonderfully non-denominational.

I think this film is better served as an indoctrination film for the Mormon church than as a murder mystery. If you remove all of the religious scenes (and there are a lot) you are left with a simplistic who-done-it murder mystery. By simplistic, I mean lacking any drama, tension, fine police skills, victim development or anything else that would have made the mystery remotely interesting. I am embarrassed to have thought this would be a good movie when I selected it, and thoroughly disappointed in the Rotten Tomato commentators for the lack of warning.

This is a great murder mystery film... the director does a great job of story telling and you never see it coming! Usually I can predict a movie like this in 20 mins or less. Not this one.
