J. R. Jones Chicago Reader Hamilton can't go too far wrong because American Idiot is such a killer collection of songs. Nov 7, 2013 Full Review Los Angeles Times A fast-paced, thoroughly entertaining if hardly trenchant show biz documentary ... Rated: 3/5 Oct 17, 2013 Full Review Moira MacDonald Seattle Times A pleasant if predictable documentary ... Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 17, 2013 Full Review Phil Gallo Billboard Hamilton smartly integrates some superb concert footage of the band on its American Idiot tour — a great reminder of how powerful that record is and how well it connected with fans. It provides a sharp contrast to how different the Broadway experience is. Jan 26, 2024 Full Review Rita Cannon Battleship Pretension Feeling like a making-of featurette that somehow got stretched out to 80 minutes, Broadway Idiot has moments that are truly compelling, but they're few and far between, and the filler will be pretty boring to anyone who isn't already a fan... Feb 16, 2021 Full Review Jared Mobarak The Film Stage Despite it ultimately being a glorified behind-the-scenes feature, it's easy to get excited and hope the American Idiot traveling company has your city on its tour. Quentin T Billie Joe ripping his shirt off, so hot Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/21/23 Full Review StephenPaul C The greatest 01 hour: and 21 minutes ever, featuring Billie Joe Armstrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Based on the career of Green Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Now I want to see the actual show. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member The biggest revelation is that Billie Joe Armstrong was not always a punk, but a theater kid singing show tunes in family home movies. This doc explores a little of what was going through Green Day's head when they originally made the American Idiot album released in 2004. Naturally, this doc focuses on translating that album to the Broadway stage. The theater production team is shown working on a story to tie the music together, the arrangements, the choreography, and the stage design, then Green Day is brought in to grant their approval. Eventually Billie Joe decides he wants in on the action. He joins the Broadway cast for a short time as his alter ego St. Jimmy, a character that he says is his dark side. A hard rocking behind-the-scenes streaming flick. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Decent look at the work that goes into creating a play with a killer soundtrack Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member I agree that this documentary was a little superficial, but overall you can't go wrong when it's about an awesome band's awesome record being turned into an awesome stage production.
