Jill N @jenokes 3h Broken Lands is as spare and unforgiving as the harsh South Texas region where it was filmed. At the same time, it offers a tenderness at the heart of the story that felt as true -and as difficult -as most human enterprises are. It felt real. There was nothing trivial to distract from the struggle here to forgive, to understand the unexplainable, to deeply connect with another human being. For me, it was like a long poem. I’m grateful for the experience to see something true taking place in an ordinary location. I will watch it again. Although it explores trenchant conflict on personal, familial and cultural levels, there is nothing sensational about it. The vast Texas landscape is a character itself, one which breathes into the story, and which we get to experience in its quiet consistency. David Morse is brilliant as Carson -- and the friendship that evolves between Carson and Jaklyn is a testament to what is redeeming about humanity. Storytelling with this kind of humility, maturity and grace is hard to come by these days. Highly recommended.
