Rex Reed Observer Malkovich has built a career mumbling his way through one disastrous movie after another, but this time he's got company. Rated: 0/4 Dec 12, 2017 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times Mostly, though, "Bullet Head" is about the characters and the crackling dialogue, and the first-rate actors giving just the right spin to their lines. Rated: 3/4 Dec 8, 2017 Full Review Michael Gingold Time Out With too little freshness for crime-drama devotees, too many furry corpses for animal lovers and a thoroughly predictable wrap-up, Bullet Head ultimately screws the pooch Rated: 2/5 Dec 8, 2017 Full Review Trevor Johnston Radio Times It's still very much a B-picture, but done with more verve and invention than you might expect. KURT G Any movie with John Malkovich gets 3 stars minimum...and I have to give one more for Brody, Banderas and that great dog actor. Good script, great acting! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/18/25 Full Review D L So while this movie had an All-Star cast, it wasn't enough to carry the directors bleeding heart love for animals. Dogs in particular. This movie was crap. Not so much the actors fault but moreso because you can't make a movie the way the director made it and have people take it seriously. I appreciate the time taken to try and flush out each character and the all-star actors did their best playing their parts to tell the story, but if I had to describe it in a nutshell, it was almost as if PETA tried to direct a dramatized movie about dog fighting. You've got to appreciate Malkovich, Toucan Sam, *sorry*, Adrian Brody's performance, as well as Home Alone's little brother, but it just wasn't enough to make this even slightly believable. Two "hardened" criminals, which consists of a 65-year-old man, a 50-year-old loverboy, a long with a junkie kid hiding out in warehouse discover that they're in an old dog fighting facility sit around getting sentimental with each other telling stories about their relationships with dogs while a killer fighting dog, (who was supposed to be put down) roams around killing everything it sees. If it sounds stupid, that's because it is. The plot was paper thin to begin with, and no amount of acting would make it any better. Obviously this was a quick payday for the cast, and probably a money laundering job for the director. It only gets the second star because at least the actors kind of tried. Some of them anyway. Two thumbs down. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/26/25 Full Review Terry H Was better than the ratings in my opinion. It sets up the plot early on then after some brief action it becomes a character driven story for the most part. Loved the character development focus of the writing and the acting from leads Adrien Brody, John Malkovich and Rory Culkin. Transitions back into the action for the final act but I wasn't as big a fan of the way that turned out. All in all though, its worth the watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/04/24 Full Review KB B Well it was so different than I initially expected. It's pretty dark and intense at times. It's worth the watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/03/24 Full Review Bryan K Cheesy, story telling that was so unbelievable it is impossible to watch without laughing. A guy shooting about 150 rounds at someone....not only missing every one...but taking time to tell a story...to the person who's life he is about to end?? Who is this story for, lol And I guess of he hit him with one of the previous shots, he wasn't going to tell his story to the soon to be dead person?? Glad he missed then I guess, lmao Anyone with a brain will hate this movie Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/19/23 Full Review Carl J Bullet Head: A Character-Driven Drama that Defies Expectations Bullet Head is a character-driven drama that may not meet the expectations of those seeking a horror-like, action-packed film. While the performances of the main characters are commendable, the motives of the main villain, a dog, are not fully explored. Additionally, the other villain, Blue, lacks depth and his actions may seem disconnected. The movie explores themes of depression, bad choices, dreams, and redemption, offering a different viewing experience that can evoke emotional responses. It might even be better suited as a book. Negative reviews and disappointment stem from a misunderstanding of the film's intention, as it is not a high-action crime film. Despite this, Bullet Head is well-executed and effectively conveys the director's vision through strong writing and acting. The focus is on character study and a story centered around a frightening dog. It may not appeal to those expecting a fast-paced crime thriller, but it succeeds in delivering a well-crafted film that fulfills its purpose.
