Critics Consensus

Burden grapples clumsily with its undeniably worthy themes, but its honorable intentions -- and strong performances -- make it easy to forgive those flaws.

Barry Hertz Globe and Mail Like Green Book, The Blind Side, The Soloist and so on, Burden fits too snugly into the white-saviour mode of storytelling. Which is a shame, because everyone involved here is doing their best in trying to craft layered characters with compelling agendas. Rated: 2/4 Jun 27, 2020 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Pajiba What is Burden teaching us or telling us about race in America that we don't already know from decades of history or decades of cinema? Mar 25, 2020 Full Review Elizabeth Montgomery Arizona Republic "Burden" does a great job of giving the viewer a look at the lives of those in the KKK beyond their hatred, but it misses the mark on making an impact on the viewer. Rated: 3/5 Mar 5, 2020 Full Review Hagan Osborne FILMINK (Australia) ...a film about Black suffering designed for white self-gratification. Rated: 10/20 Apr 1, 2021 Full Review Kt Schaefer Twin Cities Geek Burden tries to leave viewers with a sense of hope from its good-hearted redemption story, and for some, it certainly will. But for others, its shortcomings will make it feel shallow and naïve. Mar 13, 2021 Full Review Jade Budowski Decider Burden stumbles in choosing to put its spotlight on the wrong character. David The acting was amazing. The story telling of a very sad period in our history moved me. What an unexpected delight. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/16/20 Full Review Guadalupe C The moral of the movie, Bravo. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/09/20 Full Review tubambino310 It was ok,,, Needed a lil more after it went slow Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/07/20 Full Review Roach This is an amazing story of redemption. Beautifully crafted and executed. Dont miss. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/01/20 Full Review David C This is a compelling drama, with touching relationships that develop as the story unfolds. The white saviour idea seems off to me, as this isn't something that shows. The themes of hope and forgiveness seem more compelling, An honest telling of a true story, with more to it than just telling an age old tale of oppression and violence Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Jerod S Hedlund was new to me and he nailed the role of a klansman who had his eyes opened to racism in the late 90s. True story of the Echo Theater turned into a Redneck store in SC. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
