In 1861, explorers Robert O'Hara Burke (Jack Thompson) and William John Wills (Nigel Havers) lead the first colonial expedition to cross the barren center of the Australian continent. The brash, impulsive Burke forges an unlikely friendship with the quiet Wills as they brave the 2,000-mile journey from Melbourne to the northern coast of Australia. Together they must then complete the return trip with diminished supplies under threat of dehydration and death.
