Audience Member Burn (1970 - directed by Gillo Portecovo) starring MARLON BRANDO - You've probably never heard of it - Flixter apparently never has which is why I mention it under this film of the same title which I haven't seen, made in 1998. How is it Flixster has never heard of a film starring Brando, one of the most admired actors ever? you might well wonder. Portecorvo directed only two films, the other being the excellent Battle of Algiers. If you take the trouble to see Burn you'll understand why. It's about neo-imperialism in the modern era, but is set in the British period on a Portugese ruled island in the carribean. If the film seems a bit far fetched, combine this with a reading of John Perkins: Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, and you'll get the picture. Being truthful in the film industry about political systems and who are the real bad guys rather than those usual suspects trotted out time after time is not welcome, and can destroy careers. But one provocative film like Burn has more significance and impact than a hundred pulp propaganda films of the super-lauded type paraded at the Oscars, films like Saving Private Ryan, Titanic, and most recently Avatar, all celluloid Prozac which the directors should be ashamed of, useful only for dumbing down viewers and keeping people distracted from the issues that really matter. Given the way things work, how this film ever got made would be an interesting story in itself. Hats off to Gillo Portecorvo for standing up and being counted. Bravo.
