Critics Consensus

Butcher's Crossing benefits from Nicolas Cage's lead turn, which helps make this largely boilerplate Western more compelling than not.

Ryan Gilbey Guardian The film doesn’t really know what it is or who it’s for. Rated: 2/5 Nov 1, 2023 Full Review Kyle Smith Wall Street Journal The film’s hints of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Moby-Dick and The Old Man and the Sea lend some much-needed weight to what would otherwise be a pedestrian story of men fighting the elements and one another. Oct 23, 2023 Full Review Joe Leydon Variety Cage is welcomely understated in a performance that is all the more impressive for his avoiding his trademark excess. Oct 22, 2023 Full Review Robert W. Butler Butler's Cinema Scene Butcher’s Crossing is nothing less than a landlocked Moby Dick, a tale of obsession and madness on a sea of grass. Rated: B Apr 4, 2024 Full Review John Serba Decider When you have Hollywood’s loosest nut at your disposal and you don’t get the most from him, well, that’s a paddlin’. Apr 1, 2024 Full Review Sebastian Zavala Kahn Cinencuentro It manages to hypnotise, thanks to its characters, certain visual aspects, and the performance of one Nicolas Cage, one of my favourite actors (and whose presence is invaluable in this kind of medium-sized indie film). richard f I was hoping that Cage could use this Character to create a different feel from him. unfortunately he's the regular Nick Cage with a shaved head. without giving too much away, they're stuck in a brutal winter in the middle of nowhere for 8 months, and the movie spends about 20 minutes on this 8 month survival. The upsetting part is to find out the millions of American bison that were nearly pushed to extinction during this part of the nation's history. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/28/23 Full Review Magesh Beautifully shot. Well acted by Nic Cage. Good watch Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/26/23 Full Review Kevin This movie could have been premiered on regular television Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/26/23 Full Review Susanne It was sad and boring. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/24/23 Full Review Julie S i didn't care for the movie-Love Nicholas Cage but the story was boring and the end was pointless. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/22/23 Full Review Justin Butcher's Crossing is a film about greed, waste, and madness. A story that needs to be told even though it can be unsettling at times. The acting is great and the landscapes are beautiful to look at. The only reason I'm not giving Butchers Crossing 5 stars is because it's very slow moving and at times it dragged to a crawl. Not very much action in this movie but nonetheless it's a worthy addition to Nick Cage’s filmography! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
