12/03/2009 Little seen underrated gem of a film about an English guy (Laing) on holiday in Thailand who falls for a local girl (Mamee) and gets mixed up with some unsavoury Western mafia types. Presents an honest portrait of the highs and lows of being caught in a strange land, with an assortment of characters that will be all too familiar to anyone who’s spent a lot of time in SE Asia. See more 10/20/2009 In Thailand a butterfly Man is a guy who flitters from Girl to girl. Two years ago I met a very nice girl from Thailand who said she thought I would be a Butterfly Man if I wet to Thailand and she recommended that I see this movie. I did finally get to see it, and while I do not think I would be a "Butterfly Man" it did strengthen my desire to go see the country. There are scenes in the movie that can only be described as a cinematographers dream. The camera loves the land, not too mention the lead actress Napakaha Nakprasitte. Her way of peaking reminded me of almost every one of thwe friends I have made from Thailand. The movie does suffer from a bad cse of melodrama when it gets to the endings, and does seem to last about 10 minutes longer than it should. Still it is a decent movie that explores both the beautiful and seedy parts of the "Land of Smiles" and also serves as both a travelogue and a warning to the tourists. Chek it out.
