Audience Member Good cast and production quality but something is amiss. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Terrific cast, solid concept, but it simply goes nowhere. Four neurotic, struggling New York Jewish intellectuals (the characters are all right out of a Woody Allen punchline) attempt to find the funeral of a mutual friend, but end up wandering aimlessly around Brooklyn, while they argue, whine, reflect, kibbitz and goof around about girls, money and the pop culture ephemera of their youth. Kind of like a downbeat prototype for funnier future works like "Diner", and "Seinfeld", made barely passable by the talented leads (George Segal is likeable and Jack Warden is great as always) but dragged down by some overacting the turgid pace and repetitive, overly schmaltzy theme music. A rare stab at comedy from the great Sidney Lumet, that fails to find the target. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review s r I had a hard time always sympathizing, but some of the word play was witty and enjoyable. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member a friend dies his friends moron him-sound familiar? no 'big chill' here but still watchable Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member One my favorite of Lumet's films. Very black comedy that is very well acted. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Audience Member sidney lumet never fails to get fantastic and genuine performances from his actors. unfortunately for "by bye, braverman", all the actors are playing boring characters, that i couldn't care less about. Pauline Kael New Yorker Despite the importance of verbal comedy to the whole conception, the dialogue is often wrecked by clumsy, imprecise readings, and though the sound is in sync, the voices seem disembodied.
