Critics Consensus

Though unabashedly crude and juvenile, Caddyshack nevertheless scores with its classic slapstick, unforgettable characters, and endlessly quotable dialogue.

Joseph Gelmis Newsday "Caddyshack" is an above average example of the over-inflated B-movie gag film genre because of its expert performances. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 29, 2020 Full Review Judy Stone San Francisco Chronicle Should have put the gopher to work on the script. Rated: 0/4 Jul 28, 2020 Full Review Jeff Millar Houston Chronicle The humor in this film is very high-yield. I laughed and laughed, even when I probably shouldn't have. Jul 28, 2020 Full Review Sean Axmaker Stream on Demand Essentially 'Animal House' on the links, it's neither as raucous nor as outrageous as that definitive college comedy but it has the same rebellious spirit and a great cast of comedy legends showing the young co-stars how it's done. Aug 19, 2023 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com Caddyshack is problematic today in that it depicts racism and bigotry, but non-snowflake viewers should have no problem understanding that such outdated attitudes are the target of the film’s irreverence... Jay W "Caddyshack" is a difficult film to explain. The story is about a caddy and... his story is immediately irrelevant. This movie is completely taken over by the absolute comedic legends that they have just make whatever joke they wanted. Look at that cast up there. Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and Rodney Dangerfield. Combine that with the genius of Harold Ramis and you have yourself some comedic gold. Now, comedy is a subjective thing. The humor in this is very much a matter of taste. It depends on your threshold for silliness and your tolerance for early 80's crudeness. But for those who like the film, they love it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/21/24 Full Review Jim L Must see for anyone with humor and quotable one liners. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Horror fan 4 The greatest sports movie of all time. Lead by a great cast and directed by a underrated director Harold Ramis (Rip). Tim Treakle Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/08/24 Full Review Christopher J this movie is hilarious classic rip dangerfield :( Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review Blu B Maybe I had to be there when this came out in 1980 because I'm more confused than anything why this is beloved. It defintely isn't bad and keeps you entertained most of the time but it is very hit or miss throughout. The editing is just ok and jumps around A LOT between everyone until the very end. Murray feels like his story could be cut completely with the stupid gopher subplot. Danny is alright enough and starts as the main focus but gets lost for most of the runtime as it jumps around between like 4-5 different characters which really threw me for a loop. Lots of it is kind of pointless and can feel almost skit type structured than an actual story at points. There is VERY loosely a story here even more loose than Airplane! but while that hit each joke out of the park this only does it every now and than, falls flat mostly, or only get chuckles. The two best things are Chevy & Rodney. Especailly Rodney, whenever he is on screen most of the time he gets the biggest laughs and is consistently funny. Chevy is pretty cool also. I don't get Murray's weird accent/speaking impairment thing and the scene with him and Chevy talking gets very boring and dragged out and feels pointless. However everything else about it is half decent. The setting is memorable, the camerawork/framing is pretty good, and when it does hit it gets really good laughs that make it worth it. Anyone who is a big fan of the director, any actors in this, or sports comedies will like this. I do struggle to understand why this is held in such high regard though.
