A tangled web of greed, decadence and scandal in 1950s Manhattan surrounds margarine fortune heir Mickey Jelke (Frank Whaley), who is accused by his girl friend, Patricia Ward (Lara Flynn Boyle), and arrested for pimping. Police detective Jack Kale (Peter Gallagher) goes undercover as a movie actor to ingratiate himself with Jelke, who introduces him to the fast party set that favors nightclub hot spot El Casbah, which may or may not hide Jelke's alleged ring of prostitution.

Audience Member Cafe Society is the cinematic cousin to Curtis Hanson's brilliant LA Confidential. While this film lacks the scope and ambition of Hanson's Hollywood-in-the-'50s expose, there are still plenty of similarities. Cafe Society transpires in a big city (New York instead of Los Angeles) during the same era, focuses on the lurid sex-for-sale trade, and, most strikingly, delves into the incestuous relationship between the police and the tabloid reporters. It's also interesting to note that both L.A. Confidential and Cafe Society have their roots in real stories that transpired more than four decades ago. The acting is top-notch, and features career-best performances from both Frank Whaley and Lara Flynn Boyle. A great watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews
