ashley h Cairo is a decent film. It is about a reporter who accidentally draw in a singer into his mission to stop Nazis from bombing Allied Convoys. Jeanette MacDonald and Robert Young give good performances. The screenplay is a little slow in places. W.S. Van Dyke did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the drama and humor. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Poor scripting, no chemistry between McDonald and Young, and no musical numbers that are hit worthy... all of that equals a dud. You will be bored beyond comprehension with this behemoth of a film. Who was fulfilling what contract for which studio that this turkey had to be made? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member One of MGM's least-remembered musicals, supposedly a spoof of spy films; neither Jeanette MacDonald or Robert Young are well-served by the screenplay, although Ethel Waters gets a chance to shine singing "Buds Won't Bud." Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Pleasant mix of spy caper and comedy stars a much more relaxed Jeanette MacDonald than was usually the case during her MGM years. Perhaps it was the freedom of not having Nelson Eddy bellowing in her face but she's loose and charming and has a fine chemistry with both Robert Young and Ethel Waters her two major scene partners. Jeanette and Ethel's differing singing styles offer a nice variety to the entertainment although why Ethel is Jeanette's maid and still has to sing in the big show is never explained. It doesn't really matter and her musical numbers are highly entertaining. There's also a funny bit where Jeanette sends up one of her biggest hits, San Francisco. One quibble: a good deal of the picture is very dark, hard to tell if it's intentional or the age of the film. Not a great film but an little known enjoyable gem. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Delightful fun, light entertainment of the highest order. It baffles the mind that a good time gem lime this is forgotten, its easily as good as most of the "great comedies". If you are looking for a way to forget your worries and just have a great time, Cairo will amaze and satisfy. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member good stuff macdonald's last MGM film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews
