Nick Allen RogerEbert.com Cane River offers American indie cinema a hero worth remembering, and a romantic with a vision beyond his years. Rated: 3/4 Feb 7, 2020 Full Review Sheri Linden The Hollywood Reporter Jenkins' one and only feature weaves living history, charged and messy, into a homespun, hopeful tale. It's impossible not to wonder what he might have done next. Feb 7, 2020 Full Review A.O. Scott New York Times "Cane River" invites a rethinking of American film history, and also, in its disarmingly offhand, uniquely charming manner - of other aspects of American history as well. Feb 6, 2020 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews A remarkable low-budget Black indie film. Rated: A Jul 28, 2022 Full Review A.S. Hamrah The Baffler ...its bleached images capture its time and place perfectly. The film has the faded-color look of a country and western album cover from a musical tradition lost in thrift store bins. Sep 16, 2020 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix If people get a chance to see Cane River, they might be intrigued to experience some 1980s nostalgia, but they should also appreciate the larger context of how difficult it must have been to make this movie. Raycine D The more I watch this movie, the more I love it. I understand that for many of the actors on this film, it was their first time acting and I think this gave it a very natural and realistic feel. Watching the main characters fall in love and the on screen chemistry between them just makes you feel happy and hopeful. The soundtrack is just so beautiful and romantic. The backdrop of history and culture is very interesting and inspired me to want to know more. This piece of nostalgia has become one of my favorites. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/02/24 Full Review Michael E A very thoughtful, involving, and honest movie about a romantic relationship between two Black people struggling with their differences of class and skin color. This is a theme most whites cannot understand and that may make some Black audiences uncomfortable. Aside from the fact that this was produced and directed by Blacks, perhaps that's one reason why it was ignored and forgotten. The one criticism I would make is that Tommye Myrick far outshines Richard Romain in acting ability. She is lively, he is stiff. Otherwise I would have given it four stars. Nonetheless, definitely worth watching. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/27/22 Full Review carolyn g Boring. Don’t waste your money and time.
