Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Tyrone Power is seen to good advantage in this large-scale epic. Rated: 3/4 Sep 22, 2021 Full Review Nathanael Hood The Retro Set ...suffers from many of the same problems Hollywood epics from that era faced: an interminable length hampered by poor pacing...and a certain deadening heaviness. Rated: 6/10 Jan 9, 2020 Full Review Emanuel Levy EmanuelLevy.Com Lavish, overlong, and dull, Henry King's historical adventure stars Tyrone Power in what amounted to one of Fox's biggest-budget productions. Ben G Always enjoyed this film ever since seeing it on tv in the mid 50's. It reminds me now of The Fugitive only from 500 years ago with the Inquisition agent chasing Tyrone to the New World. Also makes sure we all don't forget about the abhorrent lengths the Inquisition would go to in its drive to control the populace anywhere. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/07/25 Full Review Fred F The movie is remarkable for its time period. The photography, costumes and music are first rate. It was shot on location in Mexico. At the time of filming, a couple of volcanoes were actually erupting and sending ash clouds into the sky in the background of several scenes. It is as good of an adventure epic as any of the early Hollywood features. The obvious drawback is the problematic conquest by Europeans of the Aztec Empire. There is some little counterbalance in terms of exposing the evils of the Spanish inquisition. There is one speech at the end of the movie by a Catholic priest with a hopeful message that the Americas would be a place without slaves and masters. We are still working on that goal. Overall, it is a remarkable film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/05/25 Full Review Ingrid B Tyrone Power is fabulous as ever. Handsome and a good actor. On location and Technicolor. Absolutely love this movie and the chemistry between all the actors. Beautifully filmed on location. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/09/24 Full Review Mark A Another great swashbuckler with Tyrone Power. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/20/22 Full Review richard f I really loved this movie as melodramatic as it is. The only movie I can remember about the conquest of Mexico. Although misleading in most ways it does show that the Spanish didn't conquer Mexico the tribes that hated the Aztecs played a large role. Disease, of course, was the real conquistador (not shown in the film). I was a kid when this came out so the effect on me as a young man was profound. When I was older and heavily involved in mesoamerican history I learned and did most people many of the truth about the conquest! Steven Spielberg should make "The Conquest of Mexico" and put to rest the fantasy of this film. I'm rating on a boy's memory.
