Peter Debruge Variety Kadav and production designer Mayur Sharma have conjured an endearingly analog sci-fi environment that's fun to visit, and not only distinct from Western films but totally unlike anything else being done in India at the moment. Apr 1, 2020 Full Review Pradeep Menon Firstpost Cargo is very much an allegorical take on the meaning of life and death, told through the gaze of someone with a distinctly whimsical way of looking at things. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 16, 2023 Full Review Saibal Chatterjee NDTV Director Arati Kadav keeps her feet on the ground as she lets her mind fly free. A real gem. Rated: 4/5 Sep 27, 2023 Full Review Hagan Osborne FILMINK (Australia) ...a stylish, thought-provoking and well-acted alternative to the influx of 'straggler-in-space' films dominant in Western filmmaking. Rated: 16/20 Mar 25, 2021 Full Review Shikhar Verma High on Films A sci-fi film in terms of its premise, but a truly existential, inventive, and to a stretch original oddity about life, death, and everything in between, Kadav's debut feature film is what you truly call 'out of the box.' Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 14, 2021 Full Review Rahul Desai Film Companion Writer-director's Arati Kadav's wide-eyed world-building - audacious, imaginative, idiosyncratic, subversive - is crucial to the viewer experience. Audience Member very well made, slightly stretched at times and bafflingly stupid character. But otherwaise really great. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member The Space Ship looks well operational. Good stuff! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member A beautiful satirical comedy I definitely enjoyed thoroughly. The movie has a very fresh take on death and life. Vikrant Massey is as usual, absolutely amazing on the screen. Must watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Not much use of imagination. The fiction is very childish. It was the end of it as far as I am concerned when they disposed waste into space, because it gives a message that "no matter how far we go into the future and how much progress we make, we are still going to be taking pleasure spilling filth". Pathetic. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member A new kind of story but unfortunately feels too long and boring. Acting is great. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member A brave foray for Indian cinema into the unknown 'space' of the sci-fi genre. With a truly unique premise conjoining Indian mythology and science fiction into a refreshing and original concept new to the genre. I'd go so far to say that this may very well be the inception of a new sub-genre and the movie could be defining enough to open the door for many to follow suit. Cargo has a premise which has a lot to offer when it comes to creative ideas, albeit which it touches rather lightly. This does go with the overall pastel yet sometimes thought provoking feel of the movie but sometimes leaves the audience wishing for more depth on these topics. Considering that Cargo forays into unchartered territory of the genre and that this fact presents rather interesting opportunities for explorations, the viewers are convinced to believe that the choice not to do so in many avenues is intentional keeping to the light tone of the movie. The production did great with the use of vivid colors and the analogue setting of the spaceship brings forth a touch of refreshing nostalgia, pleasantly surprising to the genre. The characters contribute with some strong acting but with restrained chemistry and emotions never delved deeper. Though it does play on curiosity it does leave viewers wishing for just a little more flavour and hoping for more definitive indications that the characters will reunite. Overall, it's good time spent taking in the concept of the film and the various thought provoking questions the various characters bring forth. I'd definitely recommend and hope this is just the beginning of a new era of Indian cinema, a stronger reason why this movie deserves more praise and support.
