Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com Ultimately, Carl(a) wins me over for refusing to completely become a fairy tale, yet at the same time offering its main character some semblance of hope for future happiness. Rated: 3/4 Aug 18, 2016 Full Review Kevin Crust Los Angeles Times Director Eli Hershko and co-writer Christopher Theokas do a nice job with the relationship between Carla and Grandpa, but the other roles go underdeveloped. The filmmakers are even less successful with plotting, telegraphing every major turn. Dec 11, 2015 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Carl(a) is a movie that stays with you for days after you see it. Her story provides a real world perspective (as opposed to reality tv) of the challenges faced by transgender individuals. Laverne Cox and Joslyn DeFreece both give really strong performances. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Stories like Carla's deserve to be told & seen! In a world that is still struggling with acceptance of others who lead lifestyles and have values different from one's own, it's heartbreaking to see that there are still those that additionally have to work hard to accept their own selves, too. The movie Carl(a) shares with us the true daily outward struggle that Carla goes through with family, with friends, with strangers - but one of the most powerful scenes of this movie really confronts Carla to think about who she really is/what defines her, ultimately proving that her own definition of herself is the hardest of all to come to terms with. Powerful story by the writers/director. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member Wonderful film and very touching about acceptance and being comfortable with ones self, and society . I liked the roles played by Carl (a) and her grandpa the most. I also liked the conversation from the audience after the movie... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member This was a great film! What a powerful message. What a perfect time for this film to be shown to our society.. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Thoughtful, intelligent and well-acted, "Carl(a)" is a welcome contribution to the transgender conversation. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member I saw the movie at the Ziegfeld NYC and it was outstanding! I wish I could be there to see it again. The director was way ahead of his time. I can't wait to see what's next! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Read all reviews
