When the king of Gaillardia dies, the tiny nation's resources and location in the Pacific draw the interest of world powers. Great Britain has long enjoyed rights to Gaillardia's mineral deposits. However, the monarch's death places them in jeopardy, necessitating the dispatch of diplomat Carlton-Browne (Terry-Thomas) to meet with Prime Minister Amphibulos (Peter Sellers). Unfortunately, the former's bumbling, the latter's obtuseness and a revolution threaten to undermine everything.

Clyde Gilmour Maclean's Magazine The plot is less consistently ingenious than those of its forerunners but its best moments are hilarious. Nov 14, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Peter Sellers , a great man, and this is a great classic film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Occasionally funny but dated. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Terry-Thomas and Peter Sellers are pretty much always a pleasure to watch. In this movie, the former is an upperclass twit working in a backwater of the Foreign Office who is thrown into the midst of an international confrontation; the latter is the sleazy Prime Minister of a small country whose mineral rights suddenly capture the attention of the world's Cold Warriors. It's the sort of social satire at which the Boulting's excelled, but this one is quite hit-and-miss. Some slapstick bits fall disappointingly flat, some of the political humor is dated, and some may be so deeply rooted in British arcana that I just don't get it. Amusing enough but nowhere near the level of "All Right, Jack." Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member another early gem from sellers Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member What happened to the Russians? Why did we only find out about the Cobalt so late in the film? Why does this film lack cohesiveness? Why is Peter Sellers given more billing on the packaging than in the film? Why is the love story so drawn out and so predictable? Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member I am a huge Terry Thomas fan but this film does not quite make it. Total (and wonderful) acting from Peter Sellers. the film is quirky and has some laughs, but something is missing. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews
