What to Know

Critics Consensus

Taron Egerton and an against-type Jason Bateman make for great adversaries in Carry-On, a throwback thriller that clears all checkpoints of plot logic with its confident execution.

Peter Rainer FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) A real guilty pleasure. Jan 17, 2025 Full Review Adam Graham Detroit News "Carry-On" is an action movie that is definitely a Christmas movie, no ifs, ands or buts about it. Anton H For a movie that had an interesting premise, decent characters and good actors it devolved into silliness. It became predictable by the end and the 'rules' of the world changed as the movie went on (major car crash/near strangled to death byt OK springs immediately to mind). Not a bad movie watch whilst on your phone. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/25 Full Review Justin H Plot holes galore. Struggled to watch over 4 separate attempts Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Matt J The movie starts out great, & reminded me of “Phone Booth” with Colin Farrell (dating myself). It’s very smart & well-written…at the beginning, then “jumps the shark” out of nowhere. It was entertaining, but there’s a very distinct point in the movie when it begins to resemble a so-so, TV movie. Enjoyable, but disappointingly went downhill. I expected a little better quality with Bateman as the villain, but the rest of the cast is forgettable, due to a predictable, fantastical plot & conclusion. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Pablo S Started all right, but ended up being nonsensical Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Paul S I love Taron Egerton, Jason Bateman, airplanes and airports so I REALLY wanted to like this movie but.. OMG. It’s beyond unrealistic. Such a good idea/plot but so poorly thought thru. Honestly not worth it. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Sean M As someone who actually works in the airline industry as a ramp agent (working the bagroom, directing planes on the tarmac, loading and unloading luggage in aircraft cargo bins), yes there are some unrealistic aspects, like the amount of breaks the TSA agent takes, the bagroom with no workers, the luggage inspection room scene, and the magical absence of jet blast. But the vast majority of this movie is honestly not far-fetched at all. They did a pretty good job showing all the security checkpoints and mechanical aspects behind the scenes at airports. It’s actually realistic enough that I’m surprised they were allowed to show these things on camera. Usually this kind of information is pretty restricted and literally illegal for workers to even talk about with anyone who doesn’t have security clearance. All of these other reviewers complaining about realism are clueless and clearly have no experience in the industry. Overall it’s a decent copaganda action thriller similar to Die Hard.
