Critics Consensus

Taron Egerton and an against-type Jason Bateman make for great adversaries in Carry-On, a throwback thriller that clears all checkpoints of plot logic with its confident execution.

"Carry-On" is an action movie that is definitely a Christmas movie, no ifs, ands or buts about it. Go to Full Review

A fairly entertaining and intriguing film that keeps you glued to the screen and, yes, let’s call it what it is: a popcorn flick, even if it never made it to theaters. At times formulaic and with some implausible moments, though. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Carry-On proves itself to be more than a mid-level thriller with exceptional performances from its two leads and consistent work from Jaume Collet-Serra and his team of talented craftspeople. Go to Full Review

Despite its at-times overwhelming screenplay resulting in a prolonged runtime, Collet-Serra and Fixman’s crime thriller is packed with enough action and mystery to satisfy audiences for the festive season. Go to Full Review

Oliwer N @Oli11 13h I know Egarton's performance is weird and bad but I feel like he has to play that dude in this movie which is fine for me! Bateman is badass and is a perfect villain! Overall it's fast paced movie! Watch it 3-times already! See more Jacob B 1d It's "Die Hard 2 meets Phone Booth" with Carry-On, a heart-pounding thriller with a memorable against-type performance from Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton playing a likeable protagonist who goes through some decent development without being just a reskinned John McClane. There is some good old-fashioned artistic licence and a few weird creative choices, plus the Christmas setting doesn't factor into the setting all that much (in other words, no quotes that are trying to be the next "Now, I have a machine gun, ho ho ho" like with Reindeer Games) but overall, this is a fun thriller that really cooks once the third act gets to having some fun action, most notably a one-take sequence in a car. Definitely the superior Ass-Kicking Christmas film of 2024 over Red One. See more Ruth W @Voiceofreason 2d Utter tosh. I think Taron Everton is a fine actor and why he got involved in this defeats me. The idea that technology could achieve all the unbelievably quick linkups and actions is laughable. Everything about it is nonsensical, there’s not a jot of tension and we didn’t bother to finish watching as it was so irritating. See more nelson O. @Nellysnacks 2d Jason Bateman gave the best performance, but besides that the lead was so nervous and not believable and the plot was boring and formulaic.Skip this unless you want a typical action film in the vein of die hard but much worse. See more Kiara F. @keeks505 4d action packed movie and it was so unexpected! it was super fun to watch!! See more Nana L @Nalele Dec 14 I found this movie very enjoyable to watch, what a likable main character, really someone to root for and what a performance by Jason Bateman as well. I added it to my thriller Christmas movie list. People complain about it not living up to Die Hard as if we haven’t all built that movie up in our heads where no one could ever reach it. But I don’t think they were trying to do that anyway, I think the feelings of excitement is what they were trying to bring up within us and that’s what it did for me. I wondered what would happen next, how he was going to pull this off. The premise, the two main stars , the funny and likable characters surrounding them. The calm and richly , almost parental like authority of Bateman. I think somewhere along the way we have all forgotten how to simply enjoy things. Carry On is enjoyable, it’s exciting and a new Christmas favorite. See more Read all reviews
