DanTheMan 2 1d Nothing says A Christmas Carol quite like Ebeneezer Scrooge committing casual acts of terrorism. Leaning more into a variety format that blends broad comedy with musical numbers and festive joy, Carry on Christmas is rife with a warmth that shines through even when the jokes are shamelessly recycled, the sense of ensemble camaraderie is unmistakable. It ultimately plays like a a condensed Carry On film draped in tinsel. Familiar faces, familiar jokes and a loose sketch-based structure that allows the cast to riff on Christmas traditions, pantomime and seasonal goodwill that captures both the best and worst of the series at the tail end of the 1960s. Most of the troupe appears in recognisably broad form, most of the time in drag for some inexplicable reason, delivering all the innuendo-laced gags with exactly as you'd expect. Cosy, cheeky and unapologetically silly even if it is hampered by its shoestring television budget. See more Read all reviews
