The plot is no more than a mess of inane sketches involving the misfortunes of hospital patients and staff, punctuated by a string of tasteless jokes about castor oil, bedpans and parts of the anatomy. Go to Full Review

DanTheMan 2 Mar 26 Self-referentialism finally hits the Carry On series. Marking the midway point of the franchise Carry On Doctor serves a pastiche of Carry On Nurse, even featuring an intertextual gag about it even with the postmodern tomfoolery in full swing. It falls back on the familiar formula of the earlier entries, abandoning the more adventurous settings of the past few films for a self-contained location full of knockabout hospital hi-jinks; The cast is on top form as usual, with a great guest performance from Frankie Howerd and a returning Sid James post-heart attack confined to a hospital bed for most of the film; nevertheless, a bedridden Sid James is better than no Sid James at all. While there seems to be a greater reliance on nostalgia for Carry On Doctor, the cruder aspects of the series' humour, not to mention a more frenzied gag structure, have started to take centre stage; the whole thing has been mildly titillating for generations now and still could fuel a fantasy or two. Some weird and wacky characters and funny scenarios make this a reasonable comedy. Story line is fairly interesting and there are some great laugh-out-loud moments. However, in between all this there are some pretty silly scenes. Some attempted jokes fall very flat. Overall it is reasonably good fun. Hardly a must-see but worth watching if you want some mindless entertainment and have 1 1/2 hours to kill. See more 04/26/2015 This is about my favourite of all the Carry On films and is way above average. It features just about ALL the classic Carry On actors from Sid James to Kenneth Williams to Hattie Jacques to Jim Dale. Once Sid James died the Carry On films took a real nose dive in my opinion - relying much more on crass humour and nudity than the more subtle 'bawdy' humour mixed with subtle social satire of the time. So this is Carry On in full flow and you will need a good few viewings to take in all of the jokes as they're so rapid fire at times. Totally recommend. I would question the accuracy of the listing for the film here though - claiming it had a dvd release in 1972! Miraculous that one seeing as dvds weren't invented for another 30 years. See more 01/09/2014 Best of the Carry Ons, almost complete cast, only Kenneth Connor missing, laugh a minute, brilliant performance from Jim Dale, and patients including Charles Hawtrey and Bernard Bresslaw. Dilys Laye is suerb. See more Read all reviews
