I must have breathed while watching "Cash Only." But it sure felt as if I didn't. This brutal and severe film has that effect. Go to Full Review

Cash Only features many familiar action movie markers, but it's distinguished by a raw energy and strong sense of place. Go to Full Review

One of the more convincingly gritty indies to hit fests in several seasons. Go to Full Review

The final, bloody denouement reveals the filmmakers' severe limitations. ... An encounter with a sadistic lunatic "solves" the dramatic and real-life problems posed by the film's own logic at the expense, however, of social and psychological truth. Go to Full Review

I was impressed by the unique story and approach to what, in the last thirty minutes, turns out to be a tense, enjoyable crime thriller. Go to Full Review

The struggles and relationship difficulties shown here are all too real and the film will hit home for a lot of viewers on different levels. Go to Full Review

Dave S Sep 12 Cash Only falls neatly into the “hey, I found a bag of money!! What could go wrong?” sub-genre of neo-noir films. Elvis (Nickola Shreli) is a landlord in Detroit who finds a substantial sum of money in an evicted tenant’s unit, cash that he decides to use to pay off his debts to a variety of unsavory characters. Predictably, things don’t go well. It looks and feels like a low-budget affair based on the cinematography and editing (and the acting and writing), but this somehow adds to the grimy and unpolished feel of the movie. On the flipside, the lack of budget also makes it look like the rough cut of some student film. Regardless, it’s an admirable attempt at a crime thriller, if not entirely successful. As an added bonus, you’ll learn a couple of things: 1) there are more Albanians in the Detroit area than you probably realize, and 2) if you are ever forced to kill somebody with a knife, don’t be shy about it. See more 07/30/2018 Pretty fucking good spin on the old "relative kidnapped by Eastern European gangsters" theme, this is a solid film, quite tense and Nickola Shreli is immensely watchable in the lead.
