Audience Member A dark and moody fairytale of a young boy who collects gold to pay off murderous troll, Cast No Shadow boasts a strong performance from its young lead and a very distinctively Newfound voice from screenwriter Joel Thomas Hynes and dirctor Christian Sparkes. It's a film that on paper shouldn't work, but somehow manages to combine onscreen in some sort of alchemy where everything just Olay off each other beautifully. A few of the metaphors are a bit on the nose, but that hardly matters when the mystical and real are so deftly handled as the film transitions between the two until you can't tell where one ends and the other begins. Liam Lacey Globe and Mail Painterly cinematography around the Newfoundland coast and a soulful lead performance from young star Percy Hynes White aren't enough to overcome an awkward script ... Rated: 2/4 Apr 3, 2015 Full Review Linda Barnard Toronto Star Sparkes shows a confident hand as director, ensuring Hynes-White's Jude swings naturally between cockiness and tender childlike moments that evoke sympathy, hinting at a lurking sweetness inside him. Rated: 3/4 Apr 2, 2015 Full Review Jorge Ignacio Castillo The Canadian Crew Unassuming and minimalistic to a fault, Cast No Shadow is exceptionally effective. Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 3, 2020 Full Review Tara Thorne The Coast (Halifax, Nova Scotia) It's not one minute of fun, but it's equal parts scary and sad, and adds another dimension to the art of the already impressive province from which it comes. Jul 13, 2016 Full Review Norman Wilner NOW Toronto Sparkes invests the proceedings with a strong sense of place and mood, hinting at Jude's unstable psyche by giving us flashes of the trolls and witches he believes lurk in the woods around his home.
